Re: How fast can you run a mile??

My best was a 11:45 2-mile... seven years ago. I practice could do 3-4 1/4 mile laps that would equate to a ~4min 1-mile, but we were required to complete a 2-mile so I practiced for endurance over speed.

That's like 20 desk years ago. Now, both my knees ache when I climb stairs, ankles have rolled/poped... With another 75lbs added to my frame. It depends on how fast I can get my keys out of my pocket.

Re: How fast can you run a mile??

I don't really know... I haven't run less than 2 miles at a clip since high school. My guess would be 6 mins.

Re: How fast can you run a mile??

My best from high school while running cross country was a 5:51 minute mile.

I doubt a lot you could run a 4:15 mile. Maybe 1 in 10,000 people can run that fast WHEN in perfect shape.

A healthy person and decent shape could be expected to run an 8 minute mile.

My best 5k ever was a 20:50, which breaks down to about a 6:42 minute mile for 5k. That course however was a bit of a joke and also a 'short course'...it was really more like 3 miles instead of 5k (which is 3.125 miles)...so it was closer to a 7 minute mile for 3 miles.

I would imagine most people who do not jog, bike, etc (keep in good shape) might manage a 10-12 minute mile. It is very easy to not pace yourself correctly and then tire yourself out easily...and run slower because of it. I am very good at pacing myself and I know just how fast I can run for a good distance before I run out of stamina. In the shape that I am in now (I take long walks, hikes, some limited jogging every once in awhile, some weight lifting, some yoga, some biking, basically a mixed bag for now) I could do about an 8 minute mile, maybe 7:30 on a really good day. If I worked out hard for a few months I could drop it to a 6:30 minute mile.

One thing to keep in mind, life threatening isn't going to help you out any. Adrenaline is good for short exertion, but it won't help you out for long exertion (it works great for anerobic bursts, but does not aid in aerobic exercise) and is also a good way to throw off pacing yourself. I would expect you would run a slower time in this case.

Re: How fast can you run a mile??

We ran a 5k in formation. 30mins flat. I kept pulling ahead with the guidon and they kept telling me to slow down.

We had two runners in my unit that could do 4min miles. They would do two miles in 10mins or less. Stupid people would try to keep up with them, thinking it was a race... I was the guy who would run with the slow people to give them a good pace to pass the 16min/2mile minimum requirement. THEN I would complete my requirement. So in reality I would run 4 miles in <28mins with all of a ~3 minute window in between.

Re: How fast can you run a mile??

I would guess slightly faster than the dog that's chasing me. I can't think of another reason I'd run a mile...

Re: How fast can you run a mile??

I ran cross country in high school, which meant 5 km races on uneven, rough courses, and practices of up to 8 miles at a time. We ran a two mile race once that felt like it was over before it began, just because I was so used to running so much further. My best time for a 5 km race was just over 20 minutes. My two mile race time was about 11 minutes, and I think if I were to run a mile all out, I could have finished under 5 minutes. I was built for long distances though, and then I started having knee problems. My dad has Osgood Slaughter's disease, so I figure I may have inherited bad knees and gave up running, for the most part.

The last time I ran on a track just for the hell of it, I hit a 6 minute mile. I could probably still do the same, just because I stay so active at work.

Re: How fast can you run a mile??

when i did cross country my best 5K which is about 3.2-3.3 miles was 18:30 -- my best mile time was 5:30 which is very good -- if you can run a 4 or 4:15 mile you are not that far off from pushing yourself to at least compete at the world or contintental levels. Olympic mile time is about 3:30.

so i suggest you do this -- get in your car and reset the trip odometer and measure 1/2 a mile -- get out of your car and run to where you started and back to your car and time yourself -- if you are under 5 minutes great -- if you are at 4mins. i highly doubt it. now i am probably at 8-9 minutes for a mile.

if you fart and no one hears it -- did you really fart?
