Re: NASA Shuttle Launch

I've been reading all about it for a few weeks actually... what's amazing is that the safety committee still recommended keeping the shuttle fleet grounded because there are still pieces of foam that could be a problem (very small chance) but the executives decided to go anyway because there are enough safety procedures in place if something does go bad with the foam again. If needed, they could actually move all the astronauts to the ISS and attempt to land the shuttle by remote control if they think it's too dangerous to risk the astronauts' lives! Pretty damned cool if ya ask me! It's sad that the shuttles will be grounded in 2010 but it'll be another few years before we have anything ready to make space trips again.

Re: NASA Shuttle Launch

I think I last read it would be a 5ish year gap between US human spaceflights which isn't awful I guess.... What I haven't been able to figure out is how many different craft they're working on. For the last 10 years or so "they" have been talking about another shuttle-like replacement capable of horizontal takeoffs and landings so it would be fully reusable. Then with the new moon / Mars programs they've come up with another Crew Exploration Vehicle reminiscent of the Apollo rockets:

So...... I don't know if they're working on both or are putting everything to the CEV now....

Mass, eh? I am still amazed at the enormities of scale here... there are emergency landing sites up to Mass, and out in Europe (ya know, across the ocean) if something goes wrong and this GLIDER needs to set down just after liftoff. Lots of power to get something moving fast enough to glide across the Atlantic!! Of course with liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as fuel, I'd hope for a little kick! ;-)

Anyone know of the gas to H[sub]2[/sub] / O[sub]2[/sub] engine conversion kit for the Mazdas?
