Nightmares

This is a rather silly question for a car forum, but does anyone know what causes nightmares?

I've been having strings of nightmares lately, almost every night. I can't remember most of what happens in them, except that the plot lines are pretty damn intricate for a dream. The one I had last night was more like a movie from beginning to end, and it's really freaking me out. They all seem to have 2 things in common: some type of evil (demons, satanic forces, cult worship), and a friend of mine.

No, I'm not on any substances and I had not been drinking. The only substance in my system last night was a BBQ bacon cheeseburger with french fries that I had eaten earlier in the night.

Does this happen to anyone else? I've been getting nightmares for a very long time now, but I never stopped to think about why. They don't make me wake up. I just sleep right through them, but I have found myself with a pounding heart pulse when things get intense...

Ive been getting some intricate dreams of late as well... Although 99% of mine arent nightmares. Its wierd, because many of my dreams include me trying to reach my life-long dream, but in the end i fail to reach my goal.

For instance, i just woke up a few minutes ago, and i had a dream that i was in this very wide but somewhat narrow two story building in which the first story was underground, but the 2nd story didnt quite have a floor (2nd floor was mostly foyers and catwalks which led to outside). Anyways, o nthe left side was a pond that led to outside, and a guy sitting by the pond. I dunno what i was doin, but i was sititng in a chair lsitening to a relgious lecture (begin wierd), and all of a sudden i get up to go outside for something but i get sidetracked and go talk to the guy by the pond. We talk about Far Cry, of all things (i guess the water graphics reminded me of them LOL [in my dream, that is], and ive never actually played that game, just have seen it being played), and all of a sudden someone was chasing me.

He handed me this huge rifle and i took off across the building. I made my way up the stairs to get outta there but they kept coming (i didnt know what 'they' was yet). Anywyas, i get outside and all of a sudden im at home in my living room. Im wlaking into the living room with two girls that i had apparently met at the building, and i was introducing them to my parents (for those of you who know me, i NEVER EVER introduce girlst o my parents becuase of how paranoid they are, but i have wanted to for some time now)... Anyways, the dream ended with my dad (who is the hardass in the family) inviting the girls to wild waters with me.

Wierd.

Re: Nightmares

But these dreams I'm having are not just "weird", they're very vividly disturbing. Have you ever had a dream that makes your chest pound like someone's playing basketball with your heart? It's the kind of stuff that if you were to ever experience in real life, you'd sooner but a bullet in your head than deal with it. The theme last night was this friend of mine that I sort of kind of have feelings for, but know that there can never be a relationship between us. In some parts of the dream, I'm getting intimate with her, and then it always turns horrific. She becomes possessed and turns into this demon and she wants nothing to do with me anymore. Instead, she goes with these demon friends of hers that always take her away, and I'm trying to rescue her... and it always leads to my death in the end. In the dreams, I can never just let her go. I'm always chasing after her, and fighting the darkest forces of evil to save her... and I always end up face down in the dirt.

In a dream I had a few nights ago, I went to visit her and she was living in the old apartment that my family used to live in when I was a kid. I knocked on the door and went inside, and this woman was there that looked very much like my friend, but older. I somehow knew it was her mother, even though I've never met her mother in real life. I followed them into the dining room where she and this mother-woman sat at opposite ends of the table. I stood somewhere in the distance and watched. Inside the china cabinet behind the table was this... thing.. like a live doll, or a really small person that was bowing in worship in front of this icon of something that I couldn't make out. There was a candle on the table and the girl was busy doing something (I won't repeat what.. it's really weird), and her mother was telling her something. I don't know if she was telling her to stop, or if she was instructing her how to do it right. Then she stopped doing what it was she was doing, and she looked over at me with a possessed kind of half-smile on her face. It was all kind of like some weird ritual... and I was freaking out. I didn't get out of bed, but I was conscious at that point and my chest was pounding.

Yeah, I need to lay off of something, but I don't know what... 'cause I don't do anything :-P I don't even smoke. Maybe it's something in the milk.

Re: Nightmares

Reality is a nightmare. Dreams vent it.

Re: Nightmares

Your dreams (and more often nightmares) can be unconscious depictions of some underlying feelings you're suppressing when you're awake.
You obviously have feelings for this person that you can't quite dismiss completely, and perhaps your inner self is warning you not to pursue a romantic relationship with her. On the other hand, that person may be engaged in an unhealthy relationship, and you are a third person or just observing in your nightmares, and your subconscious is warning you to intervene before she gets into something worse.

or you just really have the hots for her and you need to rub one out.

Re: Nightmares

Ever since I can remember, my dreams and nightmares have been very detailed and very intricate. The last nightmare I remember having, I was in an elevator and the doors opened to the elevator shaft being on fire. Yet the only thing I saw was a very bright white light. I remember screaming.

I've also become really good at waking myself up during my dreams and nightmares.

I can remember several repeat nightmares I had as a child. You would think they were all very odd.

Re: Nightmares

many of us share dreams.

How many have dreamt they were going backwards down a steep bridge, out of control, and woke up before going off the side?

Re: Nightmares

As a kid, I used to get these dreams where I'm trying to scream and have no voice, or I'm trying to run to catch up to someone (usually my mom) and I can't get moving.

I've also had the barage of falling/flying dreams. They're fun, but I haven't had one in years.

Lately, all I dream about, is people I know and my interactions with them. I've had some fucked up crazy dreams in the last year or two... and they almost always involve some kind of supernatural/demon/monster entity and the imminent danger of my own death. In my dreams, I'm always the one being chased and hunted down by these things. Lately though, they've been specifically about this girl... and just as freaky, if not more. There's always a dark side. Literally... the scenes in my dreams look like something out of Silent Hill.

I don't think I've ever had a dream in the last 10 years that didn't have some kind of sexual imagery somewhere in the plotline... usually involving some very specific girls I associate with socially. Sounds perverted, but since it's happening in my sleep and I can't control it, I'm assuming it's natural and most people experience this as well.
