Is the human race screwed??

Due to technology, natural selection no longer applies to our species. This same technology we hope to use in a fashion to keep us around long past our time. Are we doomed as a species??

Interesting take... I believe that natural selection really hasnt been able to take hold for the past 40-50 years or so, and what weve seen is an increase in cancers, natural defects such as eyesight, and a very overweight society.

I've always thought this. Natures way of controlling population, disease and such. You see it in different species. In our fight to cure everything that ails us... we're just making it worse.

Re: Is the human race screwed??

It's kind of a dark thought, but one that's worth thinking. Since medical technology can take a person with a genetic disease that normally would kill them before they reporduced, and allow them to live a normal life, we are essentially enriching the human gene pool with undesirable genetic traits that normally would have been thinned through natural selection.

Example: I have type-1 diabetes (which has a genetic component). 100 years ago, I would probably be in pretty rough shape (if not dead) at my current age of 24. Today, I am outwardly as healthy as anybody. But if/when I have kids, there is a certain likelyhood that I will pass the genetic disposition for type-1 diabetes onto my kids (as opposed to a virtually zero chance if the disease had killed me before I reporduced)

It's an extremely tricky ethical question: Is it best to preserve the life of individuals at all costs, at the potential expense of concentrating genetic disorders in the human gene pool?

I happen to think that genetic science is progressing quickly enough (relative to the rate at which the gene pool is enriched with disease) that we will find a way to negate the "problem" before it becomes a problem.

But for how long will we go? Will we stop when we are no longer affected by disease? What else? Stop death? Negate the effects of age?

This is the big question. How far do we take it? How much can we do in our conciousness? Whats right or wrong?

I dont believe we can ever answer that effectively, however, we can take to heart what we CAN do is save lives. I dont think God ever had in mind for humans to kill to make things better... look at history, its never worked effectively enough. Ethically, our stance can only be that we have to take whatever steps we can take to save a human life. Is it really our choice about who lives and dies? CAN we make that choice? I dont think we can...

But i do see the point and the grand picture. It certianly is a dilemma that has been fought over for many years. I just hope we find the right answer before screwin something up.
