So I just dl Opera browser for XP.......

And so far it seems pretty cool. Never used it before. Ive been using FireFox since it first came out and nothing else. Any other Opera users? Thoughts? Opinions?

I used IE for last 10 years, now Im a firefox guy, way faster but takes more memory when runing multiple tabs with pages loaded. I think opera is also good but I never got to like it.

Like which ones? I had that problem with firefox every once in awile. I really wish these sites would support these 2 browsers like IE. Last I heard, I thought opera and firefox are the top 2 big dogs for a different choice over IE.

Re: So I just dl Opera browser for XP.......

Been using Firefox for atleast 3 or 4 years now, I'm never going back unless I have to do some banking (they don't support my Fox). Now I'm about to switch to a Mac (when I get some more money).

Re: So I just dl Opera browser for XP.......

Anyone remember NCSA Mosaic?

I've used a decent variety of browsers, including Opera. In my opinion, Opera is great. It's definately up there with Firefox and would probably still be my default browser if it was freely available. When I tried Firefox, I really liked it... and the fact that it was free and open-source (meaning the code is open to public scrutiny which helps make it stable & secure) was enough to make me switch. I like that Firefox is so light and easy to use, also.

If I understand correctly, both Firefox and Opera are W3C compliant... which IE really is not. That's one big reason why so many websites refuse to support alternative (better) browsers. Their code is written around the ancient IE/Netscape browsers, and they either don't want to, or can't afford to, update it. IE interfaces well with Windows, which websites know most of their visitors will be using. Also, IE allows websites to do things behind the scene on your computer that others do not. I don't know for a fact, but I don't think Firefox and Opera are ActiveX/OLE/COM friendly (and for a good reason). Not to mention the Microsoft VM for Java is teh evil.

The biggest reason (next to security, customizability, convenience, and compliance) that I support so called "alternative" browsers is that I don't just use Windows. I have a Linux box, and I appreciate browsers that push for websites to eliminate Microsoft-specific code. The internet should be available to EVERY computer user... not just those who run Windows.

Luckily, my banks support Firefox.

Re: So I just dl Opera browser for XP.......

Having tabs on window was enough for me to switch. I was replying to 5 posts at once on the forum while copying from photobucket, FireFox made that a breeze compared to IE. If I had that many windows open I would forget which is which. Plus if I'm on a slow connection, I open up alot of tabs and search multiple things at the same time (on FireFox you can see when the page is loading with clicking the tab) so that helps alot.

I tried Opera right after it went free like 6 mo's ago... it was an interesting browser but it was horrible at rendering a lot of pages... and really there was no advantage to it over Firefox.
