Insurance!!

i'm an 18 year old buying a brand new mazda 3i T and so far i've gotten prices for ins ranging from 250/month to 1200/month. the lower priced quotes came from a broker who told me that i could say i'm married (using my sister's name as my wife) and my monthly will go down a bit. is this legal? the broker told me that if i get caught, the worst that could happen is the ins company will give me the non-married price instead. if this is all good and legal, are there any other ways to bring down my insurance?

btw, i'm located in socal.

Re: Insurance!!

i dont think thats legal...if u get good grades yr insurance should go down..and if u dont get tickets and into accidents it should stay at a decent price..

Re: Insurance!!

good grades....i'm taking one class at a city college AND i've been into one accident (thats still under investigation). yeah...so i'm just trying to poke around for some options. and even though i'm working full time, i'm making roughly 800 a month and i'll be paying about 280/month for the 3 and about 260/month for the ins. however, some months get really slow and usually end up making 5-600 a month, which puts me in a bad position. SO any chance i get to save some cash, helps a lot.

btw if you're wondering why i'm buying new, it's because my dad hates my 1987 crx hf and is willing to put down payment on a new car if i get rid of the crx.

Re: Insurance!!

I just turned 21 back in November, and up until that point I was paying $287/mo for insurance ($500 comprehensive, $1000 collision). When I turned 21, it dropped to $172. I am covered for higher than the Oregon State Minimum's in terms of dollar amount, so that is driving my prices up just a bit... however the trade-off for peace-of-mind is OK by me.

PS - I'm with State Farm.

Traded in... '05 Mazda 3
Now have... '06 Mazda MX-5

Re: Insurance!!

$1200 a MONTH? What kind of driving record do you have? That just seems......insane? Over $14k/year for auto insurance just seems impossible to me.

Re: Insurance!!

Mmm yea when I was 18 I paid about $80/month. We got Mercury insurance if that matters.

When I was 18 I was only paying $170. That was for a Brand New 97 Sunfire with full covage with State Farm. Now since I'm 25 i'm only paying $65 a month.
