Food Stamps

This is one program that needs a lot of work. I can see helping people that need it, but it is abused far too much. I work in a grocery store (embarassing) and I often come into contact with people who use these and what is locally called the oregon trail card which is a state given debit card that pays for groceries. I make a whopping 10.75 an hour and would not pay 5.00 for a sandwich or 3.75 for a smoothie. But people that cant even support themselves are using gov't money to get this stuff. That is complete BS.
It should instead be a coupon based program that only allows you to buy raw hamburger, produce, milk and eggs. Just the necessities and very few of them. That would possibly be enough to get some of the borderline slackers to get off their butt and get a job.

The real kicker would be that it would be only available to a family or person for a six month span and then they couldn't apply again for 3 years.

...........waitin for the bleeding-heart flamers

Makiing $10.75/hour at a grocery store is pretty good IMO.

I do agree with you that food stamps should only be able to be used for 'neccessities'. I wouldn't know how that would be monitored since , in the same order there could be milk, bread, eggs, and then a bunch of 'luxury' items. How would you separate that?

Re: Food Stamps

I thought with Food Stamps you couldn't buy already made food such as what you sold them.

There are alot that abuse it, but there are some that need it.

But people have been scamming them for many many years...don't think the Gov cares!

Re: Food Stamps

I guess there are two different cards, one for groceries and one for anything because I have had people use two cards to pay for stuff saying they are different. I get people all the time that have them denied and get really rude about it when they are usually buying completely useless stuff. It's like, I see why you're poor. I may be terrible with money but if I was on something like that I would at least stock up on the necessities.

I will say you will hardly ever see many that are barely scrapping by.
I have seen some households that got more money in Food Stamp than I use to bring home every month. That was when they were paper and you didn't need an ID.

I definitely believe that, my boyfriends Dead beat mother used to work the system and would get 500 a month for groceries for three people and the rent on their 2K a month apartment was completely paid for except for like 40 bucks of it. Her reason for not working was that the only jobs she could get were degrading, well thats what happens when you don't go to college.

Re: Food Stamps

I have seen my share of food stamp abuse: Lets buy 100 frozen pizzas and 8 cases of soda instead of diapers for their baby. (ex g/f and NOT my baby...)

Problem with making them buy the meat, cheese, milk and make it themselves... they don't know how to cook. Even if they did, they probably don't have an oven/stove. Above said abuse was cooking the pizzas at my parents AND living there for free. She got ~350/mo for herself and one kid... for food and diapers, etc. On top of that, she was getting unsaid amounts of money from HER mom. Baby-daddy was hiding from the government because he didn't knock up one, two, or even THREE girls, he had SIX baby-mommas and a seventh on the way.

Lets not get into the subject of her quitting whenever she didn't feel like showing up to work...
