test drove a new 06 GTI

Hey guys, today my dad and I decided to go take a look at the new 06 GTI. When we got there the salesman was more than happy to let us take it for a spin. What I didnt like, though, was this guy was hitting it hard right out of the lot on a cold engine; but I didnt say anything heh...Anyway, to the point. This car loves to get up and go, man you can be in just about any gear and if you give it gas you feel imediate torque, not even comparable to the 3...turbo lag is virtually not present here which was a blast. Dont ever feel power like that in the 3, but then again I do drive a 3i . Like it matters (LOL untouchable)

The only thing i didnt like about the car was it seemed like it was focused more on features more than anything...And when comparing the handling from the GTI to the 3 its like night and day. The nimble precision feel I get every day was not present in the GTI, needless to say when i got home and crawled back to my 3 I was happy again.

I mean really, we're talking 3,308 curb pounds from a tiny 2 door hatchback with a turbocharged 2 cylinder engine.. Wheres all that weight come from? Please someone explain it to me!

It was also sluggish to say the least...and While im talking about how sluggish it feels i might add that the engine didnt seem to be near as rev happy as ours... While trying to downshift on the highway i really had to try, where as in my car i can easily blip the throttle and almost immediately get responce. I guess thats turbo lag for me (since ive never had the chance to drive a turbocharged car i havent experienced it too much) but youd think itd be easier to rev up and downshift than that... but hey, im no pro

Anyone who is interesed also i suggest you go take one for a test drive, I wasnt really dissapointed in it, and i doubt anyone who drives it will be... its a hell of a car that loves to go.
i really like the car i just dont know why it has to weigh 3k + lbs..

Re: test drove a new 06 GTI

I drove one too, and while it felt very energetic, I really didn't get too much of a chance to wring it out because the test drive "circuit" at the dealer was pretty much just around the block. It did feel heavier and kinda numb.

Did you get the DVD? The grab handle feature is hilarious.

No, I didnt get any dvd...But they knew i wasnt gonna buy. He asked me what car I drive after I explained that the clutch travel was slightly less than mine.

I still like that car alot though. The way its put together and designed is very very very nice.

Re: test drove a new 06 GTI

one reason for the weight, the engine block is steel and not aluminium. Apparntly "ze germans" can't figure out how to put a turbo on an aluminium block like the mazda 2.3 turbo...

no sig
