Re: MacBook Pro!!

Apple provides some good tools to bring windows users on board. I have been a Mac user since the beginning. Welcome aboard.

All of your MS Office data (Power Point, Excel, Word) is directly readable. You can transfer it with Apple's tools or just copy and paste it if you are on a network. Mac MS Office will correctly handle all the data.

Many other programs also share file types, so you should have little problem. If you use Apple's iWork (Pages and Keynote) they will directly read Word and Power Point files (respectively). iPhoto can read any JPEG image and store it. iTunes as you know is compatible between Windows and Mac. Quick Time files are also compatible.

There is a Real Player and a Windows player for the Mac, so that will be no problem.

At first, the conventions, desktop, and icons may be strange, but soon you'll be wondering how you ever lived without the desktop/icon method of doing things. Incidentally, being a Mac user with a Windows machine at work, I use the icon system (by that I mean drag and drop, double click to open, etc.) rather than Windows explorer. So there really isn't much difference.

The place where you tell the computer how to behave is System Preferences, always available under the upper left-most icon on the title bar (I'm at work, so I am guessing it is the Apple menu). This is analagous to the Control Panels entry in Windows.

Things which are stored in Program Files in Windows are in "Applications" on the Mac. Within Applications is a folder named "Utilities", which has small utility programs you use from time to time. Your files go into a home folder whose icon is a little house. You should name it "Frosty" or whatever. Within that folder is a desktop, documents, pictures, music. etc.

Sorry to drone on so long, but I'm a dedicated Mac user AND fan. eMail me if you need any additional encouragement or advice. I'll try to help.

Re: MacBook Pro!!

Well I'm pretty geeky so I've been lurking over Macs for about a year now....finally summed up the courage (and mainly the specs) to get a MacBook Pro.

I've also been watching diggnation and I see how much Kevin Rose loves his G4 PowerBook. I'm pretty familiar with anything Apple as far as news/technology goes I just don't have any experience using their products!

Seems like there's lists on online like "Mac programs you can't live without"....looks like I have some reading to do!

Re: MacBook Pro!!

Well you can't really give an opinion of the MacBook Pro's functionality unless you have one....as its architecture is completely new to Machintosh.

Re: MacBook Pro!!

Fink for all your *nix tools and apps.

Versiontracker.com for all the little useful apps you could think of. There are a ton of them for the Mac and most are free.

Yes, things really are that simple. Don't think too hard about trying to do something.

MS not longer supports Windows Media for the Mac. They instead suggest installing Flip4Mac WMV which allows you to play Windows Media files in Quicktime.

In Applications -> Utilities, you can find some more useful tools like Disk Utility to repair permissions and check disk.
