Twice! To the same car!

Well, as some of you already know, about a year ago, I was driving down the road & a large piece of wood flew up & damaged the front end of my car. That's long gone & fixed, though.

So, yesterday, I left my parents house & was on my way home & there was a old beat up truck WAY in front of me. (we're talking probably 1 to 2 blocks in front of me). All of a sudden, boxes, bags & trash starts flying off the back of the truck. I swerved to the other lane to avoid it, but traveling 65, it was impossible. The trash hit the road & went everywhere, including on the hood of my car. The stuff was very light & I was thankful nothing got lodged on my windshield. Being that the trash was "light" and I couldn't see any damage (from looking out the window) I didn't stop. We reached a stop light & I was able to get a good look at the driver, the truck & the license plate. I called the non-emergency # for the police just to report it, but stated that I wasn't sure yet if there was any damage. They said they'd send someone to pick up the mess, and to call them back once I have a look at my car.

Well, when I got home, I looked. There are tiny, slight hair scratches on my hood now. :x They are hardly noticable at all, and can probably even be buffed out. (well, maybe). I called the police officer back to tell him that there is little damage done to my car. He (probably not wanting to do his job) told me I should just let it go. He told me it wouldn't be worth the headache b/c it's "my word against his" he said. I was a bit angry that he was trying to convince me to just let it go. But, being the nice person I am, I agreed, that I would just let it be.

I'm not so upset about the little damage it did. Instead I'm upset about the fact that the jerk (in the truck) didn't stop, nor did he even think to apologize to me when we reached the light. (I know he saw the stuff fly off b/c he braked). It could have been alot worse. What if it caused me to wreck? That bastard probably would have kept going. Why is the world full of such idiots? Such heartless people? Now my car is scratched & I'm left wondering what I should do.

Re: Twice! To the same car!

If you post some pics, I'm sure Bookeem could offer some suggestions. I'd tend to a gree with the police, though... it can be a real PITA to go after people for damages like this; a lot harder than just buffing out the scratches yourself. Sucks that it happened, now ya just gotta find the best way to deal with it.

Re: Twice! To the same car!

I don't want to go after him for the damages, I want to go after him b/c of what he did, and the lack of care he showed. The damage is hardly even noticable. It's the principal that's so important to me. That jerk needs to pay for what COULD have been a horrible situation. I'm more upset about the fact that he didn't stop or even show that he cared! If I was hauling some stuff in the back of a truck, first of all, it'd be tied down, and second, IF for some reason it flew off, I'd be SURE to at least stop & make sure everyone (& everyone's car) is okay! Maybe even attempt to pick up some of the dabri. (Which, I know can be dangerous on a road which has a speed limit of 55, but it's dangerous to leave it sitting there, too) That @ss clown better hope I don't run into him again. I know his license plate by memory.

Call the police. In Virginia I know you must have everything in the bed or box of a truck properly secured.

I had a frield who was driving down 66 in NoVa and someone's ladder fell off the truck and went through his windshield. Luckily it was on the passenger side and noone was with him.

Re: Twice! To the same car!

well, if you don't want to get money from him for your car, then it really comes down to "what law can you PROVE he broke", and it sounds like the answer to that is "none."

I advise you to forget about it. *It's not worth giving yourself an ulcer over something that you can't do anything about.

Re: Twice! To the same car!

People drive around totally disrepecting other drivers (not to mention the environement) then act surprised and shocked at the number of highway shootings.

The guy who dropped the crap should be thankful you weren't someone having a real bad day who also just happened to be packing.

I'd be a bad person to be packing. I've got TERRIBLE road rage. You're right, he is very lucky I was having a decent day.
