Re: Syriana

i liked it but you really gotta go into it expecting to not be "entertained". Honestly, the movie basically was my take on what happened in Saudi Arabia with the king wanting a more liberal government and modern country whilst his brother wanted a conservative country.

Re: Syriana

yeah you have to pay attention like no other. I want to read the book it was based on, i bet that would help. I liked it overall, but i think Traffic (same writer*) was a better movie.

Re: Syriana

After the movie ended, my girlfriend asked me if I liked it. I said "I'm not sure." I still feel that way several days later.

It was obviously trying to make a political point. It was a point that I don't agree with. But I thought the movie itself was pretty good. I liked how it showed both the US gov and the Islamic fundamentalists use people to acheive their goals. Clooney got used and thrown away when the .gov didn't like the result of a mission it sent him on, and those two muslim kids were preyed upon because they were poor, unemployed, and had no prospects for a future. So I like that, I liked the acting and the writing, and I liked how all the different plot lines were really just branches of the same story and were all connected. but the overall message of the film was just something that I didn't care for politically.

As far as the direction goes, I don't like how this guy works. I get that he's trying to show how all of these different people are connected, and trying to avoid just spoonfeeding the story to you, but I think that the way they jump around you never really get a sense for who some people are and what their purpose is. I suppose that's how it is in real life, but I personally just don't dig it too much on the screen.

So it was good. I liked some aspects of it and disliked others. Did I like the movie? I don't know.

Re: Syriana

Best movie so far this year in terms of using your brains & working through things.
Really enjoyed it casue it so far from what I am used to seeing these days.

I thought about getting the the book that it was loosely based on but after reading the snippets on Amazon, the movie's storyline is only a part of the book not the entire book.

Re: Syriana

yes thats what i meant....they are SOOOO different that the Bourne Supremecy had 1% related material(his name)...they must have completely written a new script for this film without any influence from the book cuz Identity ended so much differently and had a completely different story(but prolly about 60% was related at least)

Re: Syriana

The difference is that the Bourne movies were based on the books. Similar character, similar to the general plot (although in actuality they differed greatly)

The book "See no Evil" is not even about the same thing as Syriana. Clooney's character is supposedly based on the author, and some of what happens to him is similar to some things from the book, but overall they're two completely different things. From what I've seen, the movie's writer liked the book and the idea for the movie evolved from there. Any relationship between the movie and the book is probably due in most part to Bob Baer (book's author) making himself a media whore after 9/11 and his subsequent "cashing in".
