Re: High Gas Prices Make Someone Happy (56k I think KNOT)

I've seen that series before, but still...

It pisses me off to think about how that oil money is making a very small group of leaders sickeningly rich, while the vast majority of the middle east is shit-poor. I mean, there's some nasty greed and corruption going on here, but it can't compare to what's going on there.

Oh, but I forgot: evil America is the source of all the problems in the middle east...

Some elementary Googling will reveal that the house that is not a hotel is actually a hotel called the Emirates Palace. You can stay there, if you have money. Visit them here. Additionally, the car that's silver is not made of silver. Hate to break it to you, but it's aluminum and chromed plastic. http://www.snopes.com/photos/automobiles/silveraudi.asp

That makes sense... I mean, who the heck would base an ultra-pricey custom car on an Audi?

I have to imagine that's still an ultra-pricey custom car... real silver or not!

just remember, that money they spent went to other economies too. take the italian art, furnishings, marble, granite. the japanese home electronics. the british and german autos. the cotton from usa and silk and gold from china. native palms from california. building materials mostly from usa. persian rugs and carpet from pakistan. artists from uk and austria. the multiple labor force from worldwide.
they cant take it with them when they die. And Bush can take it out with one 'mission accomplished'

I think it's also worth mentioning that, while scapegoating is convenient, the fact remains that the world's highest concentration of individuals who could (assuming they liquidated all of their investments) actually afford such a house or a silver car is based in America.

Re: High Gas Prices Make Someone Happy (56k I think KNOT)

^^^ Who's scapegoating?

And I'm not talking about the distribution of wealth between countries... I'm talking about wealth distribution inside a country; one person (the head of the government, nonetheless) funneling his country's single (and prosperous) natural resource into personal gain.

Put another way, sure there are tons of ultra-wealthy people in the US, but at the same time the vast vast majority of the rest of the population enjoys a relatively very good standard of living. I wasn't able to find hard numbers to back it up, but I would propose that that's not the situation in many middle eastern countries.

Also, here in the US, we enjoy a huge wealth of natural resources divided among a number of categories. We are a rich country with rich citizens. In the middle east, they have oil. And oil is fucking huge. They have rich countries with poor citizens. I guess that's my main point; there is so much money in many of those countries, yet the national economy seems to benefit only a very small number of people.
