$250k goes a long way in South Africa

This is what $250,000 will get you in South Africa: My brother's house . You can't really get much in the way of real estate for $250k these days  .

It also gets you 3 Electric fences:

As nice as it is, no thanks...I'd prefer not to be a prisoner in my own home.

German travel agents robbed in South African township

German travel agents robbed in South African township Thu Dec 1,12:21 PM ET

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20051201...e_051201172138

CAPE TOWN (AFP) - A group of about 40 German travel agents were attacked by robbers at gunpoint while on a bus tour of a South African most crime-ridden township, police said.

Two assailants armed with guns stormed on to the bus Wednesday evening during a tour of Khayelitsha, outside Cape Town, and grabbed the handbags and cellphones of two of the tourists, police said.

"This is an unfortunate incident and regrettable however this is not a reflection of what people would experience when they do a township tour," said South Africa Tourism chief operating officer Sizakele Marutlulle.

A 20-year-old suspect was arrested over the attack that was apparently carried out by a gang of four, said police spokesman Billy Jones.

"Everybody is working together to follow leads so that this matter can be resolved," said Marutlulle.

The German travel agents were invited to South Africa as part of efforts to promote tourism, which has become the country's number one foreign currency earner.

Since the end of apartheid 11 years ago, township tourism has taken off, with cities and towns across the country offering to take tourists by bus to the areas that are home to most black South Africans.

The post-apartheid government has been battling to bring down high levels of violent crime, conscious of the damage that South Africa's image as a crime hotspot can have on tourism.

"Crime against any person is deplorable, but crimes against tourists affect not only the victims but every community in South Africa," said Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk.

"When a tourist is robbed it is not just a German, or an American, or a Ghanaian who suffers, it is a crime against our own future," he said.

That's nothing. Read the headlines from the "Crime & Court" section of a popular news site in SA.

Oh, and my brother lives in Johannesburg, the murder capital of the world.
