Wireless Setup Help

i just bought an airport card for my powerbook (running os 10.4) and a linksys wireless B router. i have it working fine but i have no idea how to make it a secure connection to where only my computers can get onto my network. my apt complex has 3 other secured wireless networks so im sure there are several people in range of steeling my internet.

any help and/or advise will be appreciated.

Re: Wireless Setup Help

You will need to go to the setup screen of the linksys router.
Open your browser and go to 192.168.1.1. There should be a security tab, where you can enable the WEP. This will give you a long key (16 digit), write it down and enter on the other computers you want to connect to the router.
That should help...

Re: Wireless Setup Help

An extra measure of security that's easy to implement is enabling the MAC filter. With the MAC filter, only the MAC addresses that you enter into the table will be allowed to connect to your router.

Re: Wireless Setup Help

^^^You guys beat me to it ^^^Good tips.

I'm not sure if you can do this on OSx. I don't use Macs, but I don't see why not.

An Extreme measure, although not really necessary unless your extremely anal is to hide the name of the network. You can still see the name of wireless networks even if the WEP key and MAC filters are enabled. Look in the manual for your wireless adaptor for the driver settings on how to prevent the SSID (Service Set Identifer), from being broadcast. If you do this, make sure to change your network name from the default name. It'd be kinda dumb to go to all of the trouble to hide it and use the default name

GL.
