Salesmen who think their shit dont stink

I guess appearance is everything. Anyway I went into Tourneau last week to look at a new watch purchase. I was wearing a nice sweater from J. Crew and some dockers. I went in and even though I was most likely not going to buy at that moment I asked questions like I normally would about the different models so I could sleep on it and then come back at a later date to purchase. This experience went rather smoothly.
Fast forward to today. I walk in there and start looking at different watches. I was coming from class so I was dressed down a bit wearing an eddie bauer shirt, some jeans and some off campus shoes I got from AE. Totally different experience as I was treated like some guy who was just wasting this guys time instead of a customer. Granted the guy I dealt with last week was not present but I dont understand the treatment I received today. THe store wasnt crowded but I think that because I was dressed like a normal college kid instead of the way I was dressed last time that this guy didnt think I had any money to afford the watches I Was looking over.
Their loss as I will take my business elsewhere. I am sure the commission would have been nice on a rolex submariner that they are selling at full retail.

i think it depends on the salesperson. A lot of them actually realize that people who can afford things don't necessarily dress to high standards. Others are just snobbish.

What I fucking hate about those sales people is..who the fuck are they to judge me..they work at a damn retail store, more than likely they dont own the place, and cant afford their own items for sale, so dont judge me because I dont feel like wearing dress slacks and a nice shirt everytime I go out

But as C said its not all of the sales people that are like that, just the ones who think they're special.

The perfect revenge (as with car dealerships) is to take your business to a different store and let courteous sales people earn your commission. I don't reward bad behavior by patronizing businesses that have rude employees.

Re: Salesmen who think their shit dont stink

I used to work at Circuit City and unfortunately thats how many sales people act. *I sold TV's there and I remember one time inparticular when I had just started. The "veteran" sales guys would always pawn off the bad sales to the new guys because they didnt want to miss out on a big sale. Well this guy and his wife came in and they looked like they had just rolled aroud in a pile of dirt before they came in. One of the other sales guys started to talk to them and found out they were looking for a TV for thier trailor...this and thier appearence propmted him to give the sale to me. To make a long story short it turned out they were retired and had a trailor out in the country for a place "get away from it all". I ended up selling them a $2500 LCD and like $1000 worth of accessories *. Never judge a book by its cover!

Most likely it is an ego booster for the loser salesmen to put people down.

When I was 15 my family and I were on vaca in Beverly Hills and I was looking in this doll store that sold gorgeous very expensive dolls. I had on some nice outfit and oversized sunglasses and the worker wasn't paying attention to me but when some family came in dressed kinda down for the area she immediatley came over to me to ask if I needed something. The family asked how much one doll was and the woman said "oh, I think it's around $350" and after hearing that they promtly left. Then she turned to me and said "ha, poor people".

Re: Salesmen who think their shit dont stink

My dad had the same problem back in like 96 or 97 when he bought his BMW M3. He went in in shorts & a t-shirt on a weekend afternoon, and none of the salesmen would even bother to talk to him. He was like whatever, drove off to another dealership and ordered one that same day. Sucks for that first dealer - they blew a $40k+ sale of a car they didn't even have on the lot yet.

Re: Salesmen who think their shit dont stink

I have the same problem.

My buddy and I were at the Volvo dealership my dad used to work at... We were both dressed in khakis and polo shirts. We were looking at some certified used BMWs and NOBODY would talk to us. I get on my cell, get ahold of my dad. Ask him who's the dude I need to talk to here. He gave me the name of the owner and we got business.

It's like WTF. I drove him there in my Mazda3 (he wrecked his truck). He makes ~40 too. We were looking at a nice, clean 99-01 318i or 325i. Dude that took our service... got him into a '05 S40 T5 AWD under sticker.

Just because I/he didn't spend 2000$ on a tailored suit to come sweat over a price in their crappy little showroom doesn't mean I/he didn't have enough money to buy one. (Ok, I didn't, but Jon did...)

Re: Salesmen who think their shit dont stink

I didn't buy from my local Mazda dealership because my salesguy was a prick. I went in one afternoon, test drove a Tit. Gray hatch, told him I had to be back to class at 1. He practically kicked me out when I refused to go do the 4-square with him. He called about TWICE a day for the next two weeks. Most of the time I wasn't home, but he still was on my caller ID. Once I got my car from another dealer, he called again. I told him I'd be back in that afternoon to chat.

I drove in with my new SP23, proudly wearing his competitor's dealer plates. He was put off a bit, to put it lightly.
