Re: Suicide Bombing at OU

Update: Just received this in my campus mail account...

Dear OU Students:

As you know, there was a tragic loss of life on campus during the football game with Kansas State. I have been in constant contact with the law enforcement agencies including the University of Oklahoma Police Department as well as local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies including the FBI. The joint law enforcement task force has issued a public statement which says in part "we have no information that suggests that there is any additional threat posed by others related to this incident." The University has taken every possible action to ensure your safety.

In light of the thorough nature of law enforcement efforts, we have determined it safe and appropriate to resume classes tomorrow, Monday, October 3, 2005. All classes will go forward as scheduled. I want to express my personal appreciation to OU students, football fans, athletic department staff, and supporters who have acted in such a responsible way in response to this incident. I also want to thank law enforcement agencies who made the safety of our students their number one concern from the very moment this incident occurred. The way in which this incident has been handled again demonstrates the strength of our university community.

Sincerely,

David L. Boren
President

Re: Suicide Bombing at OU

I know now that nobody cares, but......

A University of Oklahoma student died in an explosion Saturday night near a stadium packed with 84,000 people.

Although the investigation is not complete, the medical examiner believes Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21, of Colorado Springs, Colo., perished in the blast, said Salvador Hernandez, special agent in charge of the FBI in Oklahoma .

Hinrichs died about 8 p.m. when an explosive detonated near the Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

According to the universityís Web site, Hinrichs was a junior in the college of engineering.

There were no reports of any other injuries and university officials have said the spectators at the game were in no danger at any time.

Initially, police believed there were two explosives -- the one that detonated and another that didn't -- but a later search found no other device.

University President David Boren said a police bomb squad did detonate an item found at the blast site to ensure that it was not an explosive.

Re: Suicide Bombing at OU

That really sucks, but at least he didn't hurt anyone else.

Speaking of deaths at football games, did any of you guys here about the cop that got shot at the University of Central Florida football game last weekend? An Orlando police office shot and killed an undercover UCF cop after the UCF cop shot a person in the stomach. The person that got shot in the stomach was someone that was trying to break up what looked like a fight between the officer and a drunk student, which was actually the officer trying to arrest the drunk student. Details are still very shady, but a very odd incident.

Wow - didn't think such an instance would occur in the confines of America. The story really doesn't talk about the person who acted as the 'suicide bomber'. (i.e., their motive, ethnic background, injuries, etc.).

I'm glad to hear that no innocent bystanders were injured by this person's own battles with their life.

I hope things on campus can return to normal eventually... Makes you wonder though.

Btw, good luck with the rest of your studies for the semester.

Re: Suicide Bombing at OU

I got an alert as soon as this happened. I thought there was a report that a 2nd device was found and detonated by an EOD team
