Re: Why do celebrities?

well because stars can make people do things...its funny how many paris's or orlando's or Britany's we are gonna see running around in 15-20 years as teens. Also celebs are donating for sure, some more than others, some more per capitca then others.

Oprah gave 10mil...now based on a purely net worth, she gave 0.79% of her net worth to this cause. If a person that had a net worth of 50,000(that's pretty average but also good) it would be equivalent to $365 bucks.

Now personally I fell that 0.79 aint much but I also know that she has a lot of other charities that she donates to and also again her star name is worth more. Oprah reaches a lot of viewers and they do basically anything she says so if she reached lets say 500,000 people to donate 20 bucks thats another 10 million dollars generated.

Now if you look at bill gates lol, he is probably the best filanthripist out there. his net worth 50.6bil, his charity foundation is worth 29bil

That's the stupidest damn thing I've heard all day, and I sat through an hour and a half of a class called "The Global Experience."

People are bound to go on TV suggesting you donate. Celebs have the experience on TV, they look good on TV, and people recognize their name. It's all pathos.

No one is going to put Ms. Maureen Bohasslen from Smith, Kansas, and have her suggest you donate. That removes all the pathos appeal, therefore removing all incentive to give.

Re: Why do celebrities?

celebs go on tv to get you to donate because they're media whores. They do it because their publicist tells them to do it, because it improves their name and face recognition and associates them with something good. Then more people watch their movie, tv show, concert, whatever because "she's such a good person."

Yeah, they probably care about the victims. And yeah, they're probably happy to have enough money and time to persue the causes they feel are important. But don't think for a second that many of them would do it if it didn't help them sell themselves to us.

Excellent points Murph, mine exactly.

What's the use of happiness? It can't buy you money.
