Re: Prosperity Cheques!!

Alberta is rich off of Royalities on oil and gas production. So much so that we're out of debt and have a massive surplus. So the government's giving $400 to everyone who paid taxes last year.

Frankly, I'd prefer it they put it into health care or schools.

Re: Prosperity Cheques!!

Its really hard for the government to decide what to do with the money. I mean you can say put it into health care or schools but not everyone will benefit. Some people might need the extra money to ease on the bills or other use.
But either way i would be happy even if we never got the cheque its just some extra money.

In my opinion, they're just buying votes.

That money could make a huge difference if used collectively, but won't really help people individually. It seems a shame that we're into this "Rich Province" mentallity, and health care and education are clearly lacking.

Re: Prosperity Cheques!!

I have always wanted to ask, what is keeping people, who feel they don't deserve their own money back, from donating the money to the government or charity of their choice, on their own?

In the US I sometimes hear and read about people being quoted as saying "We don't pay enough taxes", or make arguements like Blitz's (nothing personal, just read your post). If people honestly feel this way, I don't know of any law that prohibits people from doing so volentarily. Go ahead if you don't think you pay enough taxes feel free to send in extra on your property tax, go give your money to hospitals, or buy a school some books.

Personally I like to keep my money and make my own descisions on how it is spent, especially when I see the amount of wasteful spending most government bureaucracies, including schools and state run hospitals, have.

As for buying votes, it's been going on down here for a long time, SSI, medicare, and welfare (both corporate and individual). Just more reason for me to keep as much of my paycheck as possible, IMO.
