Norton Sucks, now McAfee?!! ARGHH!

So my parents computer had Norton Internet Security 2005 on it for about 10 months and it was running fine up until 2 months ago. It would stop updating all the definitions and whatnot. Then it started giving errors that made no sense. I had to re-install it countless times and it got to the point where it was jeopardizing the computer. Get that, a program like that that's now screwing with the computer? Doesn't make sense. So I just un-installed it several weeks ago.

Then I had my dad go buy McAfee Internet Suite 7.0 at Staples. It's been (or was) running on their computer for about 2 weeks and then it just started to rob my mom's email. I had all the settings set-up properly, including the Spam Filters and all that stuff. I spent quite a bit of time setting it up originially. My mom started complaining to me that she wasn't recieving her e-mail from friends and family. I couldn't figure out why McAfee was robbing her e-mail. It was showing up in the Spam Filter part of the program on my dad's XP Profile, but not hers!!? This was really pissing me off by now. So fast forward to an hour ago. My mom was attempting to view her stolen e-mail from the Spam part of McAfee on my Dad's XP Profile! She couldn't view whole e-mails and it was sketchy. It showed 101 e-mails that were filtered (stolen IMO) into McAfee Spam!

I decided to just un-install the whole program and say F*** IT! I will be going through the return process to get my dad's money back through McAfee. I've already printed out the forms from their website and they have a 30-day return policy. Has anyone else had problems with McAfee like this? What pisses me off is the fact that it robbed my mom's e-mail. The rest of the software worked fine, as far as I could see.

As far as an alternative, I think I will be taking a recommendation from a friend, he said to install several FREE small programs to protect the computer. I'll be looking into those. Any recommendations?

And lastly, I thought I'd mention that on my desktop PC, I'm running Norton Internet Security 2004, and I have had no problems, over a year running and everything is fine! Norton updates and runs flawlessly.

I'm done my rant. Thanks for reading. All input, suggestions, recommendations are welcome, thanks!

I've got Norton Internet Security as well and it works fine for me. My uncle bought the actual cd from the store and he can't get it installed at all on his computer.

I have Norton also, thought that Mcafee sucked. I also noticed that since I installed an additional anti-spyware software that it runs much better. Of course when my comp guy installed the program it showed up to over 100 instances of spyware.

Wow, 100 instances of spyware!

Keep the replies coming, thanks to you who have. Yeah it's odd, my Norton 2004 has been working fine. It's all I use on my PC and as far as I can tell I don't have any spyware or any of that type of stuff.

Re: Norton Sucks, now McAfee?!! ARGHH!

Ask any person who knows about Computers, Mcafee is avg at best and Norton is crap. Norton is just a system hog. Norton and Mcafee USE to be THE BEST, now they just hog system resourses. Do yourself a favour and download AVG if you want free or NOD32 if you want to pay for a Antivirus(it's about the same price of Norton and Mcafee). Norton and Macfee have become the "jack of all trades, but master of none". Then download spybot for any spyware, along with Microshaft's free spyware program. Then just buy yourself a network router to give yourself a firewall (they work better then macfee and norton firewalls (which can be turned off by hackers, trojans and viruses).

Norton works well for me so far but my dad had to go and buy McAfree. Since it has been installed it constantly wants to update but when you go to update it takes you too a blank page. When it asks you to update you can choose to have it remind you in two days but now when we click that it just puts up a reminder again right away. It also bogs down my computer and makes it take forever to load anything, I hate it.
