San Francisco : Judge declares Plege of Allegiance Unconstitutional

What are your thought, now that some bafoon in San Francisco (I hate this city sometimes) has brought this issue back up - as if we don't have chaos in the courts, New Orleans, and Iraq.... Now someone has to bring back something that the Supreme Court politely said "We want nothing to do with."

Grrrr.....

Those are the only words I can even remember....

"I pledge allegiance to the USA....... something..... something..... one nation, under God."

Then I would sit down, and proceed to goof off for about 6 hours.

Re: San Francisco : Judge declares Plege of Allegiance Unconstitutional

I'm not going to vote yet, but it went one nation, indivisible, under god, with liberty and justice for all. So the option I would vote for doesn't make sense. I think the pledge of allegiance should be in schools, but not the god. Personally, I don't believe in God, and hence don't care to give praise to him. I don't think people who don't believe in any God, or perhaps believe in a different one (or ones) shouldn't be forced to give God that sort of recognition. I'm all about people being proud of our country, so the allegiance should stay.

good post. That's a tough one. I know I don't live down there but still I think I can comment. I haven't voted yet since I really don't know. I understand that 1) US is almost a melting pot, so whatever the majority are religiously(in the faith that believes in "god&quot that is what goes sorta(this sentence was written horribly, i hope to edit it) 2) With diversity comes required changes, recently in Canada they were considering allowing family laws from arab states to be allowed in family court ruling because of the number of arab people in Canada. This has been denied so far as there was protests to its validity in modern civilization(some of the laws are discriminatory to women). There is a name for these laws just atm it escapes me, will edit.

Personally I am an athiest with spiritual beliefs. God has no meaning to me personally. We have the word God in our national anthem as well and well it doesn't make me uncomfortable to say it but at the same time my opinion says it doesn't need to be there.

I think if this was to be put into place to do this would require a national referendum, thing is the majority might just leave it there since they are well...the majority.

Now God can have many faces though too, they may call him "Alah", or other names but it is also God to them, just not the Christian view of God. So again for these people it might not be offensive to recite this as they can just think of their God when doing so.

There is that stigma though that it means the Christian God and noone else. There could also be a harsh backlash if they removed it from the religious sector as just another political correctness "destroying the base of which this country was founded"...so again really tough one, great post.

This country doesn't even have an official language yet. I think we should work on making English the official language in the U.S. first, and then worry about these kinds of things.

Quote:
On Aug. 1, 1996, the House of Representatives voted 259-169 to declare English the official language of the United States; the Senate never acted on the bill.

Does anyone else see the problem with English not being the official language here?
(Better brush up on your Spanish, folks. It could be our official language one day.)

[/quote]if it was important enough for the founding fathers to NOT declare an official language (like all other countries do), why do you think you are smarter than them?

Re: San Francisco : Judge declares Plege of Allegiance Unconstitutional

Maybe it's something they overlooked? Or maybe they didn't want to make it English because they didn't want to pay hommage to England? Who knows. The point is, there is no official language in the US, and because of that, we have ATM's and automated phone systems that offer different language selections. Because of that, there is no NEED for many people that live here to learn English (many immigrants never do). You can disagree all you want, but my opinion remains that it is not good practice for a country to not have an official language. Years from now the majority population here will be Hispanic. What if that majority lobbies to make the official language Spanish? We all have to learn Spanish then? Come on...

I'll tell you what I think. I think there are things that we need to give attention to, and then there are things that some people want to give attention to. You tell me which takes priority. I think it's a shame that there are so many issues that need attention, yet we focus on those that can wait -- like a couple words in the Pledge of Allegiance. Give me a break.
