Re: Tired of your boss snooping on or blocking your web browsing?

FYI, a friend of mine was working for rather innane job about 4 years ago and did just this. He figured that since his job wasn't for a high-tech firm, that they wouldn't be keen on this behavior. He had a secure proxy on a server that wasn't even at his house.... and he tunneled his AIM and web stuff over SSH....... he even picked an abnormal port since he figured that port 22 was a bit too obvious.

He did this for a week - the tech guys found out what he was doing - and he was fired for toeing the line of their network security. Why they didn't just set up their routers/switches to just block all ports except 80, 21, (and whatever IMAP or DB ports he'd need) on his workstation are beyond me.

Anyway, I highly suggest that you DO NOT bother to attempt this. If your work monitors your browsing, they'll monitor which ports you're blasting out data to as well.

This would come across as a very obivous thing on a network scan..especially if you pick and abnormal port. Once they see that port open with all the traffic they are going to wonder.

Yeah, but people reading this thread shouldn't assume that sticking to the normal SSH port is going to work either...... I only know a few professions where using SSH is common - and I really doubt most people at their desk ssh to servers in order to restart apache...

Re: Tired of your boss snooping on or blocking your web browsing?

Yeah this would be very stupid. I'm sure any employer that has an IT guy who knows what he's doing would catch you easily. Bigger companies will catch you in 2 seconds, Haha.

Where I work, the whole internet system is run and secured through corporate headquarters. Yeah we have an IT guy, but I don't think he does too much, I see him walking around the building alot, so I wonder about him, LOL. All of our internet traffic is monitored AT Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, and I'm in Pennsylvania! That's some crazy ass system, I don't know how they do it, but when I go to a website on a work computer, they can see it!! LOL! Amazing if you ask me!

Once someone was looking at porn on our computers (how stupid) and it only took a matter of minutes before the people in San Antonio knew and called our management, haha! Then the next day a memo was sent out, blah blah don't look at porn, not in those words but ya know.
