F***** road maintenance! A nice drive gone bad! Do they do this to your roads?

Yesterday I was taking an afternoon cruise. I was going down a strech of two lane road out in the country cruising about 45 mph. Well when this road crossed into a different city I suddenly heard the sound of thousands of cinders and small stones hitting the underside of my car. I was like WTF? Well instead of patching or paving the road, this city covers the road in tar then spreads cinders and small stones all over it letting the cars pack it into the tar. There was no warning what so ever! So I found a place as soon as I could to stop and turn around. I then drove really slow until I got pack to the normal paved road.

Oh then I get on the freeway so I could avoid that strech of road. Welll they were doing road maintenance there to. They were doing the tar and cinder but they were patching small holes with asphalt. But they werent packing it in! They were just throwing it into the hole and moving on to the next one. Needless to say asphalt was all over the freeway from the cars driving over it.

Well then to top it off this big pickup truck starts to get on the freeway in front of me. I noticed chunks of mud all over the wheels. I couldnt move over cause of traffic beside me. I tried to get in front of it before it got on but he sped up too and got on right in front of me. I promptly backed off like 20 yards but it didnt matter. All this mud and stones started flying off the wheels. One nailed my hood near the windshield and another nailed my windshield almost directly in front of me!

So I have a nice couple of stone chips on the hood and a couple of small chips in my windshield in my field of vision.
So it looks like I'm going to buy some Langka and try to do the stone chips and also contact a glass company to see if they can do anything about the chips in the glass.

Whole thing pisses me off. Am tempted just to get the whole front bumper and hood repainted with a thicker coat of paint. :rtfm:

[/quote] If you make a big stink the city might pay for the repairs. There was a guy on a detailing forum I went to that ran into a similar problem and the city paid to have his hood repainted. Just a thought.

I hate this kinda crap. Around my work they are doing some construction on the roads and it sucks driving on them. I just take it slow and if people get pissed, oh well.

Yeah, around where i live there is a whole bunch of construction, and it takes about 45 minutes to get anywhere. Not to mention that I hear millions of tiny pebbles hitting the car... I need mudflaps for the Mazda3S with sideskirts.

same here, they just did my best friends subdivision the same way. just lay tar and put gravel over top. i had to drive at idle in 2nd gear to minimise the amount of rocks being thrown onto the car.

Re: F***** road maintenance! A nice drive gone bad! Do they do this to your roads?

I hate tar and chip surfacing. It really is just a cheap temporary fix by just resurfacing the road. It does really piss me off, I don't think it holds up that well at all. Especially when the plows come through in the winter, it seems as if the ice picks alot of the chips out of the tar. My understanding is that once it gets packed in somewhat they then come by with a street cleaner and sweep up all the extra chips that are left over. Until that happens, it's loud, and a slippy surface, like driving on gravel or sand, nearly as bad as ice. You tend to have some traction problems on the loose stuff. Not to mention it kicks up and dents and chips your hood and windshield.

My advice would be contact the road department and city hall, bring it up in a town meeting see what they will do. After all they are responsible for the conditions of the road, and should be held liable, I mean, your taxes pay for it. It may be a county or state road so you may have to contact them instead.

Welcome to my world. They have been doing this to my neighborhood for years.
