Recommend Sci-Fi/Fantasy authors to me here

OK so I've read pretty much everything by Isaac Asimov, Orson Scott Card, etc. What authors are in the same vein? Hard sci-fi especially. But also fantasy stuff... Raymond Feist I've been reading some stuff by. I've been reading some Larry Niven stuff lately, for hard sci-fi...

Re: Recommend Sci-Fi/Fantasy authors to me here

I just ordered some stuff by:
Isaac Asimov (I've read nearly every fiction book by him, but occassionally still find some stuff... plus just found a copy of HG Well's War of the Worlds with an afterword by Asimov, and I ordered his Memoirs book)
Raymond Feist (one Riftwar Saga book I didn't have)
Eric Nylund (I have Signal to Noise by him... though i don't remember it too well, but remember it being good, so I ordered another book by him)
Orson Scott Card (One of the Ender series books I didn't have, and the first book in the Alvin Maker series - no idea how that'll be)
Richard Morgan (I have Altered Carbon by him... pretty good... so ordered another one in the same series)

Have you read any Carl Sagan? I hear Frank Herbert's Dune trilogy is good too, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Back in middle school I read "Mind Transfer" by Janet Asimov and it was decent. I also read a lot of Michael Crichton before his movies came out. His books were excellent, but the movies were very lacking. Sphere was a great book if you haven't seen the movie yet. Same with the Lost World. I think the book was better than Jurassic Park but the movie was horrible!

Re: Recommend Sci-Fi/Fantasy authors to me here

I've read some of the dune books... though not in a long time. I own the first couple. They're really well done, though exceedingly boring (at least, that's what I remember).

I've read all the Crichton books, as they've come out.

I'll look into Sagan. I know the name, but not much about him.

Hard to find in some stores but Jack L. Chalker has some very interesting series.

The Quintara Marathon is a very well written series with very good characters.

The Wonderland Gambit series is wicked, you'll notice some Matrix like stuff but this book came out way before.

Well of Souls, Changewinds, Wind Riders, etc.

He is most known as a series writter but he does have some solo book work too.

He is good at using politics in his books, not as in-depth as Dune, but still. Also he loves to change characters into stuff/genders. That becomes apparent once you read a few of his series.

Oh yeah and the classics like Gibson and Gaiman

some classics you might enjoy... Robert Heinlen's "To Sail Beyond the Sunset" - some of his other works border onto sci fi bestsellers - not totally hard-core. Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Left Hand of Darkness" was interesting. Always meant to read Walter M. Miller's "A Canticle for Liebowitz" There's some others listed here... http://www.strangewords.com/weirdbooks/scifi100.html
Happy Reading!

Re: Recommend Sci-Fi/Fantasy authors to me here

OK so I've spent way too much $ on books today
Ordered things by Asimov, Card, Nylund, Feist, Morgan, Sagan, Bova, Heinlein and Weis.

BTW - Although I generally consider Weis a pretty low-end author, her Star of the Guardians series is awesome.
