computer woes, need help urgently.

i, got my last paper due for my summer school college class in a week, so i need my computer up... and fast. Pretty much, I have a 120gb hard drive and an 80gb hard drive... I used to have all my data backed up on my 80 and my 120gb used to be my windows hard drive.. But I wanted that to change. I formatted and installed windows xp on my 80gb hard drive, then dragged all the stuff BACK to my 80gb hard drive so that i could format my 120gb.... Well i formatted in windows, and then i restarted. Well, when i formatted, it told me i was missing windows files (i had it so that my hard drives will boot first, with my 80gb now the master and my 120gb now the slave)... So I was like wtf...

Restart the computer, and then it asks for the windows cd. I provide that, and it takes me to setup... WTF?

Right now im formatting my 120gb/installing windows again.... I didnt want it to be this way, I still got my stuff on my 80gb (for the time being while my 120gb formats... Help?

Summary:
-Originally had 80gb hard drive as backup, 120gb as windows xp hard drive
-Wanted to change it so that 120gb hard drive was backup, and 80gb was windows hard drive
-Format 80gb hard drive after dragging backup stuff onto my 120gb hard drive
-Install windows xp on 80gb hard drive
-Drag stuff back to 80gb hard drive so that i could format 120gb and put my backups on that drive once format was done
-Format in windows
-Turn off computer
-Reset jumpers/IDE cables accordingly
-Get an error saying that the computer cant locate a file and that I need my xp disc
-Insert xp disc
-Get taken to xp setup screen, im like ah.. hell, ill just format it from here.
-Delete partition, then format my 120gb hard drive, now its automatically installing windows back onto it...
-In the end, nothing got solved...

HELP!!!

edit: btw, i tried both my original jumper/ide config and my new jumper/ide config, same thing happens

Re: computer woes, need help urgently.

Is it possible that you overwrote some portion of the Windows OS when you were manually copying stuff over from the 120 to the 80?
Make sure you don't copy over anything inside the C:\WINDOWS directory after you reinstall Winblowz(tm). Also, don't copy over the "Program Files" or "Documents and Settings" directories either. They won't prevent your system from booting, but could cause other problems (particularly "Documents and Settings&quot.

What I don't understand is why you reconfigured the jumpers/cables AFTER you installed Windows on the 80 GB.
Try it in this order:

1. Make sure all your data is on the 120 Gb hard drive.
2. Shut down the pc and remove the power cord.
3. Put the 80 GB drive on IDE-0 (master) and the 120 on IDE-1 (slave). Set the jumpers accordingly.
4. Plug the pc back in, and boot up with the Windows XP install CD in the drive.
5. Install Windows onto the C:\ partition like normal. (DO NOT format the 120 -- it'll probably show up as D:\ if it's not partitioned).
6. Once the installation is done, test it by rebooting. Make sure everything is working with your fresh Windows installation.
7. Now copy over all your data onto the 80. Do not delete it from the 120 yet.
8. Test Windows again by rebooting.
9. If it works, go ahead and format the 120 if you want.

If I were you, I would keep some external backups aside from the two hard drives you're playing with, just in case.
I'm sorry I can't be more detailed. I've forgotten alot of what I knew about Windows in favor of Linux.

when you got multiple hard drives, and trying to switch os install on them, a good rule of thumb is, only leave one hd connected at a time, other wise you risk choosing the wrong hard drive and what not.

Oh yeah. I've learned my lesson. I had two 120 giggers, in raid 0, and 3 80 giggers.... thought i was pretty good in memorizing which hd and which partition.. i was wrong. deleted one of my 80 giggers

Re: computer woes, need help urgently.

when you installed Win on the 80GB, did you then boot your pc from that drive? Or did you install it, but reboot off of the 120GB?

and did you seriously install windows on an 80 or 120GB partition?

Re: computer woes, need help urgently.

If you have multiple hard drives, have you made sure that your BIOS is set to boot off or primary HDD 0?* I'd just make sure of that first.* If you follow what everyone else here says then you should have no problem.* I have 3 HDD's in my machine at home, one of them connected to a PCI IDE controller as I've run out of IDE controllers on the Motherboard (i'm also running 2 optical drives along with my 3 HDD's)

Don't know if others have said this but, just make sure that you have IDE controller 0 plugged into the 80 gig drive not IDE controller 1.

Anything else, lemme know.
