Kwame brown to lakers?

Ok, I dont want any "lakers suck" comments in here, just honest feedback on the trade that will be sending PF and #1 pick Kwame Brown to the LA Lakers for SF Caron Butler and PG Chucky Atkins...

My analysis: Its a risk for the Lakers to be doing the trade, because Kwame has yet to show anything more than potential. While he is a risk, this DOES free up Lamar Odom to play his more natural SF position and allows Phil Jackson a skilled bigman. They will now have a hole at PG, which they will *try* to fill with the future FA signing of Antonio Daniels (former seattle PG)...

What do you guys think?

Re: Kwame brown to lakers?

Butler has value, but not stuck between Kobe and Lamar Odom. Odom ends up playing power forward, and Butler just doesn't see the ball enough. Further, the Lakers have a logjam at small forward anyway. So, he was an expendable asset, and there was the risk that Butler would flee when his contract came up (soon...next year?).

Kwame remains a question mark. If he can at least make teams guard him, gets rebounds, and plays some defense, that's all the Lakers need. It's just a question of can Phil get Kwame to get his head screwed on straight, and stay that way. The Lakers got him with a short term contract, so that got what they needed from that standpoint. Certainly Brown has shown signs that he can play at least to a level that the Lakers need, but he has also continues to shows signs that he is something of a head case. Part of the problem with kids coming out of high school - mentally, they just aren't ready for the NBA, no matter how much game they have.

Yes, Kwame is a calculated risk, but it's a two-year contract, not seven. The Lakers can have the cap room for Yao or Amare when their contracts come up this way. All Brown may need is to get to a new team and leave the emotional baggage behind. It's a typical Jerry Buss move, a roll of the dice.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I never said that they would get Amare, just that the option to pursue him would be open to them (and that the Lakers are very specifically planning that far ahead for just that event). Further, there are a lot of teams out there - odds are certainly against the Lakers and in favor of Phoenix at best.

At the same time, Shaq will never leave Orlando. Shaq will never leave Los Angeles. Wilt will never leave Philly. Jabbar will never leave Milwaukee....

...and I suspect that if Amare has to keep playing center, he WILL be amenable to leaving.
