Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Review

Last night, wifey and I went to see the above-referenced movie since we both loved the original version (plus she loves her some Johnny Deep). 8)

First off, this movie is much darker then the original. I guess that is because Tim Burton produced/directed this version.

They stayed true to the same basic plot, but added/deleted a good bit of material from the original. It is kind of like its own story of the original.

The ompa-whompas are a little mini story of their own. I will not give away the plot. The songs? Wow...talk about modernization. haha

Overall, it is worth the big $$ for a movie ticket.

Your first name isn't Johnny, is it?

I haven't seen it b/c all the newspapers around here are blasting it, and why remake something that was perfect the first time around?

Re: Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Review

I really didn't think it was all that dark.

I did think it should be renamed "The story of Michael Jackson" "come in little boy" he also looked like michael jackson, and acted like him.

I liked the movie a lot, overall.

Re: Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Review

i was debating whether to see it or not simply because its a re-make and re-makes tend to suck - especially when the originial is such a classic....Maybe i will sucker into it and go pay the $6.50 and watch it.

Re: Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Review

haha - I told the wifey that I thought he sounded like Michael Jackson too. Some of his comments were hilarious though!

The original IS a classic. Just bought the DVD at Wal-Mart for $12.99.

Wow. you're very right on this.

Honestly think that the Gene Wilder version was far better. It had more depth to Wonka, and the songs were creepier (like all the creepy stuff on the boat ride).

The new one (sorry folks) just doesn't like up to the book or the original. The only element that could even come close is the squirrels nuts (that's in the book, not geeses and gooses). I missed the musical aspect beyond the loompa's (thought I did get a kick out of the new songs). The book itself is darker, and Tim Burton tried to convey it, but he twisted the storyline around and just didn't hit the spot.

A prime example would the the Glass Elevator. Let's just say the number of people who knew it existed was in the original movie.

Same goes for ol' Slugworth -- where was that element in this movie, other than the story of why the factory closed? Everlasting Gobstoppers???

This movie was a big let down - don't believe me, read (yea R-E-A-D) the original novel.
