CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A faulty fuel-tank sensor forced NASA to call off Wednesday's launch of Discovery on the first shuttle flight since the Columbia disaster 2.5 years ago. The space agency did not immediately set a new launch date.

The decision came with less than 2.5 hours left in the countdown. Up until then, thunderstorms appeared to be the only obstacle to an on-time liftoff.

Launch control said it will take some time to figure out the problem.

The problem was with one of the four engine cut-off sensors, which are responsible for making sure the spacecraft's engines shut down at the proper point during the ascent. NASA said it appeared that the sensor was showing a low fuel level, even though the tank was full.

The sensors "for some reason did not behave today and so we're going to have to scrub this launch attempt," launch director Mike Leinbach told the launch team. "So appreciate all we've been through together, but this one is not going to result in a launch attempt today."

Re: Shuttle Launch Cancelled

Yeah what a bummer huh? I was right here when the special report cut-in on my station. It always catch's my attention when I'm running the show, CBS has a cool lookin countdown to their special reports and their famous breaking news music, hahah, it's always exciting.

I do commend NASA though for their professionalism for scrubbing the launch. We don't want this one blowing up on the way up. They did everything right! Ok, I gotta go run a commercial break, later.

I kinda figured this would happen. After the issues with yesterdays deal. It was bound to happen. Cant wait for the launch to happen.

hmmmm

I am starting to think Nasa subcontracted building and maintenance of the shuttle to Kia.

Re: Shuttle Launch Cancelled

They don't fuel the shuttle until just before launch, that's probably why.

Hey I work for the operations contractor. We’re not Kia. The thing to remember is that this vehicle is doing something that man has very little experience with. We’re pushing the boundary of today’s technology, and problems do come up. Especially since the shuttles are 20 years old, stuff is worn and stuff breaks.

This was purely a NASA issue. If they had done a tanking test on the new tank instead of doing two on the old tank, this issue would have been spotted.

This issue could be big or relatively small. They are hoping that it is just a box that takes the signal from the sensor and converts it into something useful. The fact that this did happen on the old tank makes it seem more probable. If it is the sensor, it has to roll back and be replaced in the VAB.

Not trying to be a dick here, just curious... I know the shuttles are 20+ years old and I always read that most of the development ideas and technology was 10 years old when the first shuttles were finally built. If this is really the case, we're hardly "pushing the boundary of today's technology" in my opinion! ;-) It's simply being extra careful that absolutely nothing goes wrong with the mission - which I am all for, especially with the multitude of people that will surely be watching this special launch live!

I am really looking forward to the next generation of space vehicles, though. It'll be sad to see the end of the shuttle era, but amazing to think what we'll be able to do with the new hotness. Same goes for the Hubble - it's an amazing machine which has twice over fulfilled its original expected lifespan. That being said, there are several new telescopes even more spectacular in the works that need funding. Let's keep pushing forward! The space program has always had the power to inspire and awe every generation. It shouldn't be held back by too much conservatism and beaurocracy!

Re: Shuttle Launch Cancelled

The problem with the "end of the shuttle era" is that NASA cancelles every new plane it comissions. So it'll end up being private industry (or the euro's), not NASA that sets the new milestones.
