Mazda 3 gets its doors blown off....

.... by another Mazda 3.

Now that I've got your attention, here's what happened. I was coming home from a night out with a friend of mine around 11 pm Saturday night (about an hour ago). We were on I-95 South heading back into Central Philadlephia. For the first half hour of the ride on I-95, we were stuck in some serious traffic because of construction work. In the meantime, we were surrounded by about 5 different Mustangs (my friend's absolute favorite car). So as I'm sitting there, driving, and listening to him go on and on about Mustangs, I'm wishing I had some open road to play (note: some of them were V-6's). A little bit down the road, we cleared the construction work and were able to accelerate again -- but alas, no mustangs.

Wouldn't you know it that at that very moment a black Mazda 3 sedan identical to mine comes flying up behind me and passes me on the right. He gets in my lane just in front of me, and then takes off again  Once I realized exactly what had just passed me, I stumbled to gain my composure and downshifted to 3rd. I barely managed to catch up with him, because once I noticed that I had hit about 105 I decided to back off. He kept going. I would estimate that driver took his 3 pretty close to the top speed cutoff. Before I knew it, he was gone -- a black spot in the distance.

I have been eagerly awaiting the moment to meet up with another Mazda 3 on the road that wanted to play. Now if I had only had a warning that he was approaching, so that I could get up to speed Damn black cars in the night!

Nonetheless, that was very very fun.

So..... which one of you was it on I-95? :P

100 MPH on I-95 at night in the Philadelphia area?

Do you have a death wish or something? 95 has to be the most patrolled highway in that state.

^^^ Well that's a good point. On that particular stretch, there were very few other cars (spaced few & far between -- plenty of clear road straight ahead), and there were no police at the time. It's definately not a risk I would take every day.... Seeing that 3 fly by got me very excited. I'm ashamed

Re: Mazda 3 gets its doors blown off....

I wasn't really expecting them to, but it would be interesting if they did. I'd imagine someone that drives like that (presumably often) has some interesting viewpoints & stories

I say they presumably drive like that often because that person had no limits. I stopped once I hit my limit and realized I wasn't going to catch up. He/She kept going without a care, or fear, in the world. I noticed that driver weaving around other cars down the road, half a minute after I backed off. They just kept going like their ass was on fire. I don't know if he/she had the stock governor installed or not, but they were likely going at least 118, IMO.

It's crazy to even think that there are people out there that don't post on the boards. It's quite often that you find someone that doesn't know about the boards or just doesn't post. But it's hard to think 'why not?' Kinda weird.

Maybe you'll run into them again later down the road. Or maybe they'll find the board and start posting.

118 is really not that fast. I think the 3 handles that speed quite well. However, when there are a lot of other cars around it's a different story.

Yeah, the 3 handles speed very well. I'd even go as far to say it handles it just as well as the GTI, which I consider one of the best "speed handling" cars I've driven. Although I must note I don't get much enjoyment out of driving fast, it's acceleration I like.

I don't know about 118... I've never gone that fast. But I *can* agree that the 3 handles 105 very, very well. My friend in the passenger seat commented that he didn't feel we were going that fast at all. It was very smooth, but most of all, it was STABLE as a rock. It has my old Protege beat by leaps and bounds. My only gripe with this is that I can't "feel" my speed. It's very easy to be caught speeding with the 3 because at 80, you feel like your only doing 50 or 60 (in comparison to other cars I've driven).

Applause to the suspension design team at Ford/Mazda for a job (very) well done!
