From the EFF: 48 hours to stop the broadcast flag

I got this from the EFF today:

Quote:
Rumor has it that someone on the senate appropriations committee is going to try and sneak an amendment in to make the broadcast flag (DRM in digital television broadcasts) law this week.

The EFF has an action alert where - if you are from Alabama, Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Philadelphia, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, or Wisconsin - you can contact your senator on the committee, and tell them to stop the amendment. To take action on this issue, click on the link below: http://action.eff.org/site/Advocacy?id=145

If the text above does not appear as a link or it wraps across multiple lines, then copy and paste it into the address area of your browser.
For more info on the broadcast flag and why you want it stopped see http://www.eff.org/broadcastflag/

Yeah they did but the rumor is that the MPAA is having their lackey politicians introduce an amendment into an unrelated appropriations bill to try to sneak it by.

Re: From the EFF: 48 hours to stop the broadcast flag

Basically the broadcast flag would let the movie/tv studios control what you can do with TV shows, if they don't want you to record or TiVo them they could stop it. If they wanted the show to delete itself off your DVR after a month or after you watched it once they could do that too.

Plus it would increase the cost of HDTV TVs and recievers as manuafactueres would have to be "certified" by the FCC tha they used the broadcast flag.

Re: From the EFF: 48 hours to stop the broadcast flag

Which is why these copy protection schemes are pointless for preventing actual piracy. All they do, indeed al theya re intended to do is stop the average consumer from exercising their fair use rights.
