Pissed it all away

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German lottery winner who blew all his winnings decided he was better off supplementing his income as a thief than claiming welfare benefits, a court in the central town of Meiningen said on Tuesday.

The court said shortly after the man had frittered away the last of his prize worth around 760,000 euros ($921,000) by autumn 2003, he turned to robbery, looting cars and houses for sums as small as one euro.

"He's confessed to about 60 offences," said a spokesman for the court. "He would break in to see how much money they had -- I guess you could say it was a kind of lottery too."

The spokesman added the 49-year-old, who stopped working after his cash bonanza in 1997, had said he was too ashamed to go to the welfare office after the money ran out.

"He didn't want it known he'd spent it all."

The court said he faces a jail sentence of several years.

he probably figured this would happen to him....

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Some people seem to have all the luck. Just ask Donna Goeppert. Earlier this year, she won $1 million playing a Pennsylvania Lottery scratch-off ticket, then turned around and won another million-dollar jackpot last week.

"What are the odds of that?" the 55-year-old woman said, calling her good fortune "just unbelievable."

The odds of winning just once are 1.44 million-to-1, according to state lottery officials. The odds of winning twice vary depending on how many tickets are scratched. Lehigh University professor Bob Storer placed the odds of winning twice at 419 million-to-1, if 100 tickets are played.

Goeppert's win in January allowed her to pay off her mortgage and her children's mortgages, buy a new Cadillac and save money for her grandchildren's education. She purchased her most recent winning ticket for $20.

Lottery officials confirmed Goeppert has filed a claim for the jackpot, which will take four to six weeks to verify.

Not an uncommon story. Who's to say I wouldn't go nuts with half of the money he won. But my plan would be:
1) Buy a house.
2) Pay for my parent's home.
3) Give my Dad enough to retire.
4) Open up a trust fund for my brother's kid (his first about to be born end of this month!)
5) Invest half of the remainder in a safe guaranteed return fund.
6) Quit my job. Take the year off and write, go back to school, something to improve myself.
