I hate banks

So I'm bad at keeping track of my Checking account balance. Today I log on to my banks site to see that I got charge for 7 overdrafts...all of which were about $2-$7. Each charge was $33...you do that math.

How is that fair!? Fucking banks think they can do whatever they want and no one will complain, this is just exploitation and pure greed. Huge companies taking liberties with working class people to make a quick buck...it's just wrong.

Ah well...I guess it could be worse. Sorry, I just had to vent to someone.

And to top it off...my girlfriend is buyin a used Neon!

Here in Canada there are only a few banks. They are all Crown controlled by the government.

There in the states you guys have a lot of privately owned banks. They tend to get away with more as they make a lot of their own 'rules'.

what happened? how did you bounce so many checks?

what i would do is go into your bank and talk to the manager. tell them what happened or make something up, like you thought your g-friend deposited money already. and ask them if there is any way they can void the charges...or at least most of them

I thought I had more than I did, forgot about a few things. Just used my Debit card for lunch a few times, and one of them was actually a FEE for using another banks ATM. So I was charged $1.50 from that bank, and $33 from my bank. I would have just moved money from savings over if I had known I was low, it only would have taken like $20-$30 to cover them all.

What a day.

Be responsible and you won't have overdraft charges. YOU agreed to the terms and conditions of the checking account, YOU failed to take them into account, YOU failed to be sure you had sufficient funds to cover the check, YOU are responsible for the charges.

The bank only charges what it wants because you allow them to. If you didn't bounce checks, even for $2, it's not an issue.

That said, look at Bank of America. I have a checking and savings account there-- the checking is linked to the savings so if I go over my checking with a debit card purchase or something it'll take the money out of my savings with only like a $5 service charge. No hit on the credit like bouncing a check, either.

Enjoy your spahgetti, you're very rude.

as much as I would like to feel sympathy for you (seeing as how I've been in your situtation before) the fact is that you overdrew your checking account, your bank has a fee/penalty structure in place for such things, and you knew about this because you had to have signed something when you opened your account in which you agreed to the fees. If you didn't, then that's a problem and you should get a lawyer.

It sounds like you need to keep better track of your account balance.

There are, however, many banks that will do things to prevent this situation from happening. Many will automatically take the overdraft out of your savings (or another alternate account) for free or for a very small fee. Other banks may offer overdraft protection in the form of a line of credit or for a monthly fee. If you feel that your current bank is screwing you then you should probably shop around for a new bank.

There are pretty strict rules for how a bank has to operate. A certain "Great Depression", as well as numerous other banking scandals, has seen to that. They are allowed to come up with their own fees and such, but you're perfectly free to find a bank that has more agreeable terms. I'd gladly take more choice and the ability to get more for my money from a bank than having only a very few government run banks. The .gov gets enough of my money through taxes, I certainly don't want them responsible for my checking account.

Not to sound like an asshole or anything but i think there is nothing unfair about the situation. you used more money than you had therefore you used the banks money. Getting mad at the bank is like eating mcdonalds every day then getting mad at Mcdonalds because your getting fat.

you guys make it sound like he bounced a check for 2 grand....they were all less than 10 bucks.

yeah he screwed up but it was a very small screwup that doesn't warrant a $200+ fine for $20 of overdraft

unfortunately the bank doesn't care how big the overdraft

Unfortunately that's how it is, been there done that. Like someone else said, I have Bank of America's linked checking/savings system now so if I do accidentally draw $2 over or something like that it just pulls from my savings.
