PLEASE HELP, DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!

I took my dad's Chevrolet Lumina to the the PepBoys shop on Friday for oil and spark plug change. After they did the work on it they tried to back it out of the shop and steering wheel was not working. They took it back to inspect what's wrong with it. They told me that I have to pay $290 for them to replace my steering wheel column because it was broken. I told them that the car was working perfectly when it was brought to the shop but manager won't budge!!!

What should I do? Is there any government agency that can help me?

Thanks

Check a post I started a few months back about Jiffy Lube! Anyway, call their corporate headquarters and complain to them- they should be able to help you out. With my situation the manager handled the problem, but I was told that if he didn't, I would have to deal with their corporate offices. Good luck!

How old is the car? Did the work that they performed have anything to do with the steering column?

I once took my car in for it's annual inspection (in VA we have to get an annual safety inspection) and as the dude pulled it out of the garage the shift linkage broke. Sometimes the timing on things is just bad.

The car is undrivable in its current state. They can fix your steering for under $300. Get a complete written estimate detailing the problem and the procedure and cost to fix it. Then demand the old/broken parts. Take them to another mechanic and have them verify the problem.

Your only other option is to tow it somewhere else, and then you have no guarantee that they can find or prove that Pep Boys did anything to it.

Thanks for all replies, I just received the call from the CORPORATE MANAGER and he said that they will fix it for free!!! It took call to the Better Business Bureau and the lawyer to get him to call me!!!

that's good news that you were able to get out of this without paying. I mean, how stupid do you have to be as a service manager to try this crap with customers? It only takes a few reports to the BBB and they'll have some bigger headaches than a $300 repair to worry about.
