How inconsiderate can people be?

So today I pull into this parking spot, and im facing the opposite direction of the guy in the truck next to me. As soon as i stop, this guy opens his door directly into my car and it was very obvious it had hit it, because the door came to a sudden stop. So while im sitting there in disbelief he just gets out, shuts his door and hurries into the store. I jump out, take one look at my fender and see this red mark about 4 inches long. At this point my blood is boiling, so i go after this guy to have some words with him but hes already at the entrance to the store. I then go back to my car and thank god all the paint came off and there was no damage. The thing that really pissed me off more than anything was the lack of any any apology of any sort. So i go into the store to confront him and he sees me and starts trying to move away, i can tell hes real nervous and wont make eye contact with me and I just ask him why he didnt apologize or say anything at all.

Him: " I wasnt sure if i had hit your car"
Me: So the thought actually occured to you that you did you were just too chicken shit to say anything"
Him: "Well you did just kind of park right next to me"
Me "ITS A PARKING LOT!, thats what people do!"
( at this point the staff at the deli is starting to take notice)

anyways there was more words exchanged but i was so damn pissed i just had to walk around the aisle, and whatd you know, not 20 seconds later and he and his truck are gone.

Maybe i overreacted but I think the lack of any apology is what really got to me. Anyways i just had to vent, had there been any damage to my car then it would have been a different story, but thankfully there was none.
Oh well i dont know why i shared this, just had it on my mind.

Yeah, it sucks having people be complete assholes and then assume that no one else will care.

I hate comint out to my car and seeing a beeter F150 or something parked next to me - always makes me think the driver tagged my car.

Well, I guess the good news is that your car is fine and the other dude didn't get his food from the deli

Oh - and since I'm an inconsiderate prude sometimes; I'm going to have to move your thread to the lounge. I hope you understand

you under reacted if anything IMO. some F OFF rearended my car in a parking lot and just drove off, didn't leave a note or anything. did about 1000 in damages. it really isn't a lot of damage, but still 1000 dollars is a lot of money for something i didn't even do :P

if i ever see someone hit someone's car in a parking lot and try to drive off i'm going to call them in for a hit and run. they can enjoy explaining that to the cops. my pet peeve is parking lot damage

i drive a 03 RSX and a 90 JDM RHD MR-2 GT.
lots of my friends own 3's thats why i'm here.

Ditto. Too many people don't give a rat's ass and have no respect for other people's property.

I hear it all the time... "normal wear and tear", in regards to door dings. IMO, seeing a car rolling down the road with a ton of dings looks terrible... normal wear and tear is rock chips, etc... not some inconsiderate fool opening his door into your car.

You definitely handled it much better than I would have. I'm not a confrontational man, but he would have had it coming if I would have been in the same situation. Kudos to you for keeping it under control. Never know how some people will react, nowadays.

My mother does NOT ding other people's cars, but she drives a boat, so she always squeezes into spots that are way too small. I'm surprised she doesn't have more dents as a result. My mother in law on the other hand was completely clueless, she parked however she wanted, crooked or whatnot. This is one reason I always park way at the back of the lot, on the end. One, I need the exercise and it's not going to kill me to walk an extra fifty feet, and two, at least one side of my car won't get dinged by some weirdo who can't park. The other thing to look for is to park next to a ricer-they don't want their car messed up anymore than you do

damn! ya i hate it when people do that... that's why i always park away from everybody. omg, this one day my mom was getting in our jeep (grand cherokee) and i was already sitting in the back with my lil brother and she opens the door and lets it slam right into my mirror! lol i screamed and she was like what's wrong with you? and i was like "you just hit my mirror with your door!! and dad always complains about how i never park at the top of the driveway next to the jeep"

What I hate the most is when I park away from everyone else..and I mean AWAY from everyone else and some jack ass has to park their POS minivan or truck right next to me...Im like come on youre already out in the middle of nowhere there are 8 open spots around me, and you just HAD to pick the one right next to me....ass holes... I dont think you over reacted at all..I would have gotten out my handy dandy aluminum baton and gave his door one good rap in the side and the moved to a different spot...or moved to another store more likely...

You made 2 critical mistakes.

1. You should have taken his license plate and informed him so he won't mess with your car later. (not that it will really do much unless he does significant damage and you see him do it, but still a good threat)

2. You should have left before him. There was nothing to prevent him from taking out his embarassment/revenge for public humiliation on your car with his door when he left.

Otherwise you handled it quite well. I would have gone medieval on his ass. Not to mention stuck a couple of tooth picks and a little glue in his door locks. A nicely smeared piece of gum works too.
