CTV.ca News Staff

Drivers confident that by locking their car, no one will be able to get inside might be surprised to learn just how wrong they are.

Toronto-area contractor Darrell Greer recently discovered that the locks on his GM van can be easily opened with keys for another vehicle.

Greer told CTV News he was working on a construction site when he discovered the unexpected 'feature' by accident.

"I sent out a helper and my key opened up somebody else's van. He realized when he opened up the doors it was carpenters' tools not carpet layers."

well there are only a few key combinations, maybe a hundred or so. so if you flag down a mazda owner it isn't likely they will have the same combo.

A hundred combos or even fifty is okay.

My parents were out for a Sunday drive a few years ago and stopped to help a women that locked her keys in here early 90's Dodge Caravan. She was parked at a local tourist attraction and did it by accident. My father tried their key (they owned a 2000 Caravan at the time) and just had to wiggle it a bit. The door opened at 2-3 tries. He was curious and tired the ignition, same thing, he key started her van. Dodge's are famous for it. Dodge/Chrysler are famous for it. I had friend that owned dodge shadows in highschool. The would always move each other cars on dinner breaks. If u own one dodge shadow, u owned every dodge shadow.

Also, 75-85% of all cars that are stolen locally are dodge/chrysler products. Just a little something to think about.

^^ Parent's Dodge Caravan's key was so jacked I could take it out when the iginition was on.

They replaced the old van with a newer one and the old keys worked on the new one too. :? There wasn't much to the old ones left, just some very worn down ridges on a thin sliver of a key.

I try my electric door opener every so often. I'd like to see if that combination is around here somewhere.

Uhhh....

I don't really see how people would go around purposefully attempting this....as if someone wanted to break into your car I think there's far easier and faster ways than hoping your key might work.
