SUV owners get free gas?!?!

WTF?!?!?!

Quote:
Owners of gas-guzzling SUVs and other heavy vehicles who use them entirely for business can get Uncle Sam to pay for four or more years of fuel costs -- in the form of tax breaks. It's hard to think of a worse formula for wrecking the country.

they don't get free gas, they just get a tax break that the author of the article compared to years of free gas.

and the tax break was originally created for things like farm vehicles...large-ass trucks and the like, so that farmers (who the US has a long history of supporting with things like this) could replace older vehicles and still stay in business.

When the law was created we didn't have consumer trucks (Hummer, Escalade, etc) that were even close to the size of vehicle specified in the law. The laws mentioned in the article just grandfathered in the old deductions, so it may be a 2003/2004 law, but the provisions have been there for a while in other laws. It's nothing new, unless you're a writer with an agenda.

SUV owners get free gas?!?!

A lot of places down in Houston were offering free gas for a year if you bought an SUV last year. Nice to see SUV sales are suffering. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate SUVs, it's just hard to see around them.

it's their big moneymaker...without SUV sales, US carmakers are in big trouble

I agree from a personal standpoint...but it's not good for the auto industry. Which makes me ask: do they depend on SUV sales because they're so popular and earn a good profit, or are SUV sales so popular because the auto companies push the hell out of them...because they earn a good profit.
