I hate my speed governor

Okay....last night at about 2 am on 167 north in Washington I was driving and decided to see how fast my 3 can go. Well it eventually reached 120 and then the accelerator pretty much shut off. My mechanic friend says its the speed governor. Has anyone developed a chip to bypass this yet?

May I ask you what purpose you have for needing to go over 120?

No chip yet that I've heard about. Why not get hold of Superchips and ask when they're going to bring one out for the Mazda3.

Did you really hit 120? or was it 118? A lot of people here maxed their cars out at 118, same with mine several times.

I've hit the limiter numerous times while cruising through the dead spaces in Nevada. If I'm going to hual along excessively fast, I ususally stick with 105 though. Just seems a bit stabler for some reason.

Man I drove on the Auto Bahn last week. There is no reason to go 120 ever...100 is plenty fast

Yeah, the speed limiter sux! :x

I worked up a spreadsheet to determine the maximum speeds based on the stock tires and wheels (for the 3s), gear ratios and rpm redline. In 4th gear the maximum speed at 6500 rpm is 116.6 mph; in 5th gear the top speed possible at redline is 149.7 mph but with drag and other parasistic losses the engine may not be able to pull that hard.

Anyway, here is an image of the spreadsheet analysis. I also worked up the rpms for various speeds:

The way the car accelerates from 110 to 120, I would imagine drag REALLY rears it's ugly head on towards the top end of 120 making much over 130 extremely difficult on a stock vehicle.
