ive been to death valley once before when i was in high school. i had a good time cruzin around and riding quads on the sand dunes. went all around there for 3 days i think and had a great time just driving, riding bikes, quads, hiking, and taking a tour of scotty's castle. i went in winter time so there wasnt much in terms of foliage. sounds real cool now this time of year, wish i could stop by with all this going on.

When I lived in Arizona, every once in a while I'd go with my wife to visit her Aunt and Uncle that live in Florence. Florence is a small "town" in the middle of the desert. I'm pretty sure that the majority of the population there is employed at the local Maximum Security (or super max.. I can't remember which) Federal Prison. There's literally nothing but desert for miles and miles.

Anyway, we went to visit her Aunt and Uncle during the spring and I was completely blown away by what I saw. I had been there during the summer (when we had first moved down) and the desert was exactly as you would imagine.... dry, hot, sandy and full of weird lookin' cacti. During the spring, the desert turned green! All the cacti were covered with colorful blooms, and floor was covered with mossy vines that snake around in every direction. I distinctly remember the air smelling very sweet. It had an eerie beauty that I can't compare to anything else I've seen in nature. The wildlife seemed more abundant as well. I saw 8 jack rabbits and two roadrunners. My wife and I could've sworn we saw a coyote but I never got more than a glimpse. It wouldn't have surprised me if there was more than one Coyote considering how many rabbits we saw. In any case, even the "imaginary" site of a Coyote was enough to warrant ending our nature hike and heading back to the trailer.

If I lived near there, I would be joining the hordes of tourists to catch a glimpse. That sounds very cool indeed.

Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.

I'd be right there with ya. Most people who have never left the comfort of their cities and states in the midwest and east (save for those who live in the moutainous areas) have NO idea how beautiful the "desert" areas of the west are. The first time I drove through Nevada back in '87 I was blown away. The landscape was nothing like I'd ever seen before here in Michigan.

I had a funny experience one time when I went to the Pacific Ocean with a friend of mine in Sacramento. He had been there maybe once or twice in his life, so when we were on the beach he was really excited about how it looked. Almost overwhelmingly, he was like, "Isn't this amazing?!!" I had to be honest with him at the time, as I found it very ho-hum because it looked VERY much like Lake Michigan to me, which I had spent a great part of my life swimming in. The sand along Lake Michigan is even nicer than that along the Pacific Ocean, too (in No-Cal...not sure about So-Cal).
