About the "apple insider leak"...

I was wondering if anyone knew the extent of the "leak" that Apple decided to sue over. I want to make very clear that I do not want to know the specifics of what was leaked. Rather, I was just wondering about the level of detail and importance of the leak.

To me, Apple generating some horribly negative PR against some of their most supportive members - and they've already dropped to a 2% market share for desktops and laptops - was this really a smart move?

I can see a lawsuit if Apple were planning some really sneaky campaign or had develped some super-computer that was going to wow the world in 3 months - but from what I've gathered, all the bloggers "leaked" was some info about memory and basic machine specs... hardly something that I feel Apple should go crazy over.....

Anyone have any more insight? Again, don't post what was leaked

Here is a good article on it:

For what it's worth, if this was something that would infringe on patents or to steal info to patent yourself, it is just Jobs being the hard head he is.

As much as I like reading Apple rumors, I certainly believe Apple has the right to go after people knowingly leaking proprietary information.

They have the right - but I'm thinking that the negative public image they're conveying is damaging the company as they finally hit a stride. Apple freaks love guessing what's coming up next from their beloved companies. Blog writing started with the "mac-minded" types on sites like LiveJournal (back before the idea was known as a "blog&quot.

Just when you can start liking Apple again, they sue blog writers over alleging that Apple is going to release "a new G4 based iMac with no screen?"

We hear hundreds of rumors from car manufactuers and electronics manufactuers all the time - some end up being true, and some are just random garbage. Leaking code is one thing, but trying to tell the future of upcoming products is a crapshoot that few take seriously anyway.

Can you imagine if you got sued because some dude on this forum posted that pic of the "Ford Fusion with lots of Cheetos pained on the side?" This sucks, and Apple is stupid for making this a topic at all.

How do you sort out the bullshit from the lies? I guess you could just wait for the manufactuer to sue over it.

If this were Microsoft or SCO, everyone would be crying for the accused. Apple, just like the rest, has a legal department filled with lawyers whose job it is to keep Apple IP where it belongs. Big business is big business when it comes to silly IP matters which no one really cares about.

Someone once said that there's no such thing as bad publicity. This is also true for Apple. I mean, they currently hold what... less than 3% of the total computer market, I believe?

The people who buy Macs (by and large) are zealots, and would probably continue to do so even if Steve Jobs personally burned down their homes and put their cat in a blender and hit frappé.
When your consumers will pay inflated prices for what is, in the PC world, ancient hardware, will live with a smaller software library, accept that they have few to no upgrade options, and pay $120 a pop for service packs, they're a captive audience. If THAT doesn't drive them away, nothing will.

All this whole issue does is get Apple into the minds of the other 97%+ of the population that doesn't associate them with anything more than the iPod.
So in this case, bad publicity really IS good publicity.

97% of the population does not have non-mac computers. That figure includes cash registers, etc.

But anyway, this isn't like being sued over posting fusion pics or something like that. Those pics are taken out in the open. This would be more like sneaking into Ford R&D and taking pics.

At the end of Q4 2004, Apple held 1.7% of the worldwide desktop market.

Depends what polls you look at, really. But in actually shipping figures they're higher than that, if you include only desktops. Most include all types of computer systems though (everything from mainframes to cash registers).
