What is Evil?!?

Can you please define what you mean by "evil"? I think I understand what you mean by "wrong", but can you just go ahead and tell me that too... because if they aren't the same thing, I'd like to know what they mean to you.

I ask because, to me, this word "evil" is... way over used. It's a word that doesn't really have it's own meaning, but rather is full of emotion: anger, hatred, revenge, bitterness, etc. I'd just like to know what you (LeeLee) mean by that -- especially since you are an atheist, and therfore, I assume, are not using the Biblical definition of "evil".

Thanks!!

What is Evil?!?

My definition of evil covers only acts of evil.

An act of evil can be defined as:

An act that willfully, unecessarily harms another being or something that is valued by others.

This has a few components.
"act" - I would also include an inaction.
"willfully" - you are aware of what you are doing and are not forced to do it by some circumstance or because you were coerced into doing it. You also are aware that what you are doing has consequences for the other.
"unnecessarily" - there was no provocation, no extenuating circumstances, there were other choices available you did not take, the harm done was out of proportion to the circumstances.
"something that is valued by others" - I would include things like destruction of art work, nature.

I don't consider people evil. Only their specific actions.

I knew a girl like that. Mean. But, somehow, people felt sorry for her. Not me, get away from me, bitch!

airchinapilot: I would use the term "wrong" or "immoral" for that. Would you then agree that "evil" is just a synonym for "wrong or immoral action"? If not, please explain. If so, then I would recommend avoiding the term "evil", as it carries so much negative connotation... unles, of course, you WANT it to carry that connotation.

To me "immoral" or "wrong" has more to do with the type of society you are in when you commit the act.

If you were in Aztec times and you ran up the pyramid and stopped a priest of Quetzocoatl from ripping the heart out of an enemy prisoner everyone attending would be shocked. You would certainly be commiting an act that offended everyone's morals in that society. And it would certainly be the opposite to what society at that time considered right.

However, according to my definition, what the priest was doing is evil because he or she is doing harm to someone where there was no sufficient reason.

Also 'immoral' and 'wrong' to me carries no 'weight'. If you steal a cookie, that is immoral in almost every society and wrong. But is it evil? Stealing a cookie wouldn't fit my definition because it doesn't do anyone really any harm.

Stealing a bag of rice that might feed a starving village would be evil.
