Man Tries to Toss Cigarette, SUV Ignites

I just want to know one thing... what the hell are they making back seats out of that would make them burst into flames almost immediately after coming in contact with a smoldering cigarette?? That does NOT sound right... I think this moron was driving around for an hour and didn't realize what was going on.

On a side note, I hate assholes that flick their butts out the window!

Motor Trend

A man barely escaped serious injury Thursday after a lit cigarette he tried to toss out the window while driving across the Bay Bridge blew back in and ignited the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The unidentified man was driving westbound at about 10:40 a.m. when he tossed the cigarette out the window of his Ford Expedition, said CHP Officer Shawn Chase.

Carried by the wind, the cigarette landed in his back seat and almost immediately burst into flames. The man quickly pulled to the side of the road, and leapt from the flame-filled SUV, which continued rolling into a guard rail, Chase said.

"He thought he had thrown it in park, but he didn't and it just kept going," the officer said. "It was in flames by the time he got out. He had some of his hair singed on the back of his head. It burnt down to the frame. There was nothing left."

The incident forced the closure of the Harrison Street off-ramp and one lane of traffic flowing into the city for about an hour.

He said the man will likely face a misdemeanor charge for littering.

"We see people throwing cigarettes out the window all the time but never a situation like this where it comes back in," Chase said. "This guy was lucky."

I thought this was hillarious. After all that, and the poor guy got his hair burnt off... all they want to do is fine him for "littering". He didn't even litter. The cigarette was in his car the whole time... unless they consider abandoning a Ford Expedition on the side of the road "littering"

yah, leaving a burning suv should be an arrestable offense.

Seriously though, I'm thinking this guy left out a critical piece of information... something like how he had to bring gas to the wife or kid because they ran out of gas and he accidentally spilled some taking it out... Seats don't explode like that! My family is fairly loyal to the Ford Motor Company, and I've seen many seats get cigarette burns without much drama. Maybe that guy didn't realize his first cigarette from an hour ago flew into the seat and it was just a coincedence that it burst into flames right after he tossed his second one...

That whole thing just seems fishy to me.

I agree. I thought there are laws about automotive interior flammability.

now THAT is fucking funny. Very astute observation, man!

People here do that crap all the time too and last year there was $30 million spent putting out the resulting forest fire in one incident. The community has all rallied around the guy who did it, saying 'oh, it's okay, he's learned his lesson". BS! Forest fire fighters getting injured on the job won't likely see it that way. I have friends working in forestry and seeing some of the dwindling forests go up in smoke is a bit of a sore point with me. In the summertime seeing municipal fire crews putting out grass fires on the highway medians is a common sight.

Maybe this guy was in the city so no potential for forest fire, but still people's out-of-sight, out-of-mind attitude is getting pretty damn annoying.

While the chances are slim, having some doorknobs butt come in your window while driving could cause the same fire or a similar nasty accident kind of situation. The car's ashtray is within easy reach for a reason. What's the matter, the ten seconds it would take to dump it out at a gas station gonna fuck up someone's whole day's schedule?

USE THE GODDAMN ASHTRAY!!

Also, while we're here. Is it just me or does anyone else notice that the vast majority of litter on the street, sidewalk, parks, etc is from fast food joints? Particularly from McDonalds, from what I've seen. Whassup with that? Lazy, lazy, stupid people.

Maybe "Karma" has finally caught up with him
Now I just wonder when "Karma" will catch all the other smokers who throw their cigarette butts out the window of their moving vehicle.
