TOP SPEED: How Fast Can You Go?

Well, I can't endorse speeding when it jeopardizes the safety of other people (aka reckless driving). But for those moments where you are driving on the highway with the vanishing point at the edge of the horizon, sometimes flooring it can be exciting.

Consequently, I've stumbled on a webpage a few years ago called TopTen (http://uk.e39.de/). Initially, it had the Top 10 speeds people have done in their road cars. But as time progressed, the page collected more and more people's top speeds and pictures, so now it has multiple languages (originally in native German) and now top ratings for countries. Unfortunately, our country is misrepresented, with only a few entries. So in all honesty, if you drive anything more than a few kilometers per hour in the local parking lot, you should make it to the top 10 (assuming that there isn't a minimum speed requirement for posts).

As I understand it, our Mazda 3 is electronically limited to some 115 mph (185km/h). Now, I haven't taken mine to that speed, yet, but I'm sure someone has figured out how to eliminate that governor (assuming they change their OEM tires to something that can handle those speeds). Anyways, take a look at the page... and if you ever drive on the highway with your digicam, snap a picture and upload it to their site (link is at the bottom of the page, or e-mail them at [email protected]).

Cheers,

PiCASSO

On my bike I've hit 172mph. In the mazda probably about 112mph. Waiting for the sct tuner so we can get rid of our limiter.

my last motorcycle had a speedo that read 180mph. i buried it one time (bouncing off the rev-limiter in 6th gear). my philosophy: you've got to top out everything atleast once

So as of yet, there is no aftermarket ECU or "chip" for the Mazda 3? If not, I'm sure one will be along soon enough.

My car, a Maxima GXE (base model), is electronically limited to 139mph. SE-trimmed cars from the 4th generation had no speed limiter, and claims have been made of exceeding 150mph with a 5-speed (although I suspect there may be some "kentucky windage" in there).

Remember, the faster you go, the more horsepower is required to continue to accelerate because of increasing air resistance. Even with a rev limiter removed, there is a "terminal velocity" of sorts where the engine HP can't overcome wind resistance at the engine's RPM at that speed.
