UPN Cancels Enterprise

UPN and Paramount Network Television jointly announced Feb. 2 that its low-rated Star Trek: Enterprise has been canceled after five seasons. "This will be the final season of Star Trek: Enterprise on UPN," the companies said. The series finale will air on May 13. When Star Trek: Enterprise ends its run, it will mark the first time since 1987 that no new Trek series will appear on the air.

Enterprise becomes the first Trek series to end prematurely since the original Star Trek aired on NBC in the 1960s. All previous Trek spinoff series, including The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, have completed seven-season runs.

This year, new executive producer Manny Coto re-energized Enterprise's storylines with episodes that hearkened back to the original series. Last year, the series attempted an ambitious season-long story arc centering on the hunt for the Xindi.

UPN said that the prequel series will have produced a total of 98 episodes. The early cancellation announcement presumably allows producers to write and produce a series finale.

I liked the Next Generation. Despised the old ones and didn't get into Deep Space Nine or Voyager.

Star Trek needs a rest. It became mediocre during Voyager. Not bad, not good either. They've completely run out of stories after four series. The last characters I felt anything for were from DS9 and Next Generation. There's a reason why Stargate and SG:Atlantis have become so popular, it's because the writers snicker at the Trek-cliches that have powered every series since ST:NG. In the other direction Battlestar Galactica really is pushing boundaries in how serious a space opera can get. Trek has always been this safe, pleasant entertainment. After so many years it's become moribund. Fans like the series only because it's filling in this fake history and because it's wrapped up in the Trek universe. But look at the crew of the Enterprise. They are cyphers for every other recent Trek crew. A formula that was fun the first, maybe second time and now evidently worn thin.

I love Battlestar Galactica. It reminds me a lil of Space above and Beyond that use to come on fox some years back. I think it was like 95-96. I miss and liked Babylon 5 Series.

The Next Generation and Deep Space 9 were my fav's. I never got into Voyager past the first season. Didn't particularly care for Enterprise either.

Babylon 5 was very interesting when it first came out. I couldn't get into the habit of watching it though.. not sure why.

I liked Babylon 5 to begin with because it had a greater scope than any of the Trek series. They embraced computer graphics early which meant they could mount pretty big battles and had multiple setups in a single episode. It also had good story arcs. I liked the big strategic and political machinations, especially in the wars between the races. Like I said, big scope. However, the actual episode writing, the dialogue and the human character's casting sucked the big one. It was painful to watch at times how mediocre it was underneath the pretty graphics and exploding ships.

Space: Above and Beyond had a good concept but the casting again was NFG. The show runners tried very hard to be gritty and 'realistic' but every time I looked past the graphics and the production quality everything said "TV actors, TV quality stories".

Enterprise was very boring..I watched ten minutes of it once..man did it suck.Surprised it didn't get yanked off the air earlier. But yeah, BattleStar Galactica is awesome (I got to watch them film the pilot!)
