PhotoChopping License Plate

Why do people edit out their license plate #s in the pictures? Is there something people can do if they have your license plate #?

(mods: not sure where to put this topic...)

Some people would write down the license plate number and they can check your personal information such as name, address, DOB, phone number, SSN, SIN, etc. provided they know someone working in the DMV.

Ah, I've never understood that either, until now. I figure people see your plate when you're driving around, so how is it different online? But now I know.

More exposure to nut-jobs on the internet....not that NOVA doesn't have a large number of nut-jobs, but you get the point....

There are some serious thieves out there and any information is good information to them.

OK... but if they know someone in the DMV that's willing to break the law and give them all your information, then what's stopping them from just saying: can you find a "John Jones in Florida"? I mean, I still don't see what having the license plate benefits you. Sure, having SS# & DOB is bad... but they don't have to have your license plate # to get that. Oh... unless... maybe I know where you're going here... if they just want to find out YOUR real identity... so instead of some anonymous person whose personal info they have, they have YOURs. I guess I can see that. But, if someone is that paranoid, I hope that they are using an anonymous proxy while writing on this forum and/or surfing other places on the internet. I think it'd be easier to get a "crooked" ISP than to get a crooked DMV worker. But, just a guess... :?

It's also for security.

Lets say you put $10k into your car, and you post it on a forum with your license plate.

Someone in your area could be lurking on the forums looking for people like this, they know exactly what you have in your vehicle that's of value.

Yeah, that makes more sense to me, Frosty. Before I didn't really hear anything that convinced me otherwise, as you see license plates every day in your daily commute. If someone wants to get someone's personal info, they can do it by seeing your plate in person or online, which was no different to me. However, if you're listing all this expensive hi-fi that you've put in your car, giving someone a hint to where to find you may not be such a good thing (I don't care about my plate, everyone sees it listed in my sig and I have nothing to steal! ha ha).

That's my reasoning... On one of my other forums we had ~5 break-ins and ~3 cars that were stolen in a short period of time. All listed thier mods, had lots of pics up... etc. Most were from a 50 mile radius of each other.
