Gene Mutation Makes German Boy Extra Strong Muscle Baby

June 26, 2004

A genetic mutation in a five-year-old child from Berlin is responsible for
his bulging well defined muscles. The boy's story, written by his doctor
Markus Schuelke, is published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

MuscleDr. Schuelke, the boy's doctor since his birth says the youngster
doesn't stand out on the playground, however, he can perform 'feats of
strength' when he puts his mind to it. "He's a normal Boy", said Dr.
Schuelke.

Shortly after the boy's birth, he was taken to Dr. Schuelke because he was twitching. Dr. Schuelke determined the twitching was nothing, and after two months the twitching subsided. This was when Dr. Schuelke noticed the boy was particularly muscular.

Testing provided insight into the reason behind the boy's bulging muscles.

Dr. Schuelke tested the baby for mutations in the myostatin gene and found both copies of the gene were mutated. His body wasn't producing myostatin, which regulates muscle growth and muscle mass in humans.

Rare disease makes girl unable to feel pain
Genetic disorder deprives kindergartner of natural alarms BLOCKER PRICE CLOUD Stephen Morton / AP Ashlyn Blocker's feet are examined for scrapes at Patterson Elementary
School on Oct. 26.

The Associated Press
Updated: 11:56 a.m. ET Nov. 1, 2004

PATTERSON, Ga. - Ashlyn Blocker’s parents and kindergarten teachers all
describe her the same way: fearless. So they nervously watch her plunge
full-tilt into a childhood deprived of natural alarms.

In the school cafeteria, teachers put ice in 5-year-old Ashlyn’s chili. If
her lunch is scalding hot, she’ll gulp it down anyway.

On the playground, a teacher’s aide watches Ashlyn from within 15 feet,
keeping her off the jungle gym and giving chase when she runs. If she takes
a hard fall, Ashlyn won’t cry.

Ashlyn is among a tiny number of people in the world known to have
congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis, or CIPA — a rare genetic
disorder that makes her unable to feel pain.

PEACE!!!!

I don't think that "feel no pain" thing is new. I remember articles about how people with that disease have problems since they never learn what "not to do" and can't idendify if their body has incurred some problems.

Sometimes, when I look at pictures of women, I feel a certain way, a certain part of my lower body stretches... does that make me Mr Fantastic (Reed Richards, power: elastic body)?
