Zero Gravity

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered
that ball-point pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat this
problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen
that writes in zero gravity, upside-down, on almost any surface
including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over
300 C. The Russians used a pencil. Your taxes are due again--enjoy
paying them.

/begin rant

The saddest part of that lil story is that there are people out there who actually believe that BS!! First off....the original story, as circulated on the web and part of fuckin annoying forwards, said 12 million.....not 12 billion!! 12 billion is MORE than what a single apollo mission cost. Each apollo mission was around 10 billion per mission actually.

The space pen cost 2 million and 2 years to develop and was made by the Fisher pen company. Before that both the US and Russia used pencils (pre 1967). The problem with pencils however (as smart as it makes the Russians look) is that graphite easily flakes (or the tip can break) and can cause havoc with a space shuttle's navigation and electronic systems. Finally, both the Russians and Americans use the space pen for their flights nowadays.

The only thing left is to see when the purple monkey will make it's way into this story.
