Paid Travel Expenses....? *UPDATE*

So at my job I've been at for a month they're screwing me over already and I need some advice. When I was interviewed I was told for the job, the first week of training will be at $10 an hour, and after the training I will move up to a garunteed base of $14 an hour plus bonuses. So after my first week of training I find out it's not all I was told it would be. The manager told me it's based on performance so if I do a certain number of applications an hour I'll slowly move up to $14 an hour. At the moment they have me at $11.50.

So then at this POS job that I have they decide they are going to send me up to Courtenay for 5 days (about 4 hours away by car). They asked me about it on Monday and I said yes I would go (thinking everying would be paid for) and they want me to go tomorrow, thursday morning. So I finally only got my hotel information THIS evening, and they said they are paying for my hotel. So I asked my manager what other expenses are being covered so he told me nothing else, except for the hotel. It's gonna cost me about $60 CAD in gas money, and about $30 CAD a day just for food. That's over $200 I'm expected to pay....has anybody heard anything about this? I've never heard of a company that won't pay for your travel expenses. I've only had the job for a month so I didn't wanna say anything negative if you know what I mean. So what they are doing is moving me up to $14 an hour (which is what I SHOULD be getting paid right now) just for the time I'm going to be on my trip to cover my travel expenses. WTF kind of shit is this? I need some advice. When I get back from my trip I'm going to be contacting the head-office in Vancouver to explain to them that this is unacceptable and I'm going to provide them with all my receipts and tell them that if they do not reimburse me for my travel expenses to expect my resignation letter and a visit to the labor board.

I feel like they're using me!!! HELP!

What company do you work for?

The company I work for sends me to GA or CT for training at least once a year, usually the trips last one to two weeks. They buy the plain ticket for the GA trip and pay 37.5 cents per mile for the CT trip (3 hour drive) along with my hourly wage for travel time. Once I'm there all meals are paid for. They either shuttle us to restaurants or we can expense $30 per day for food.

I would call HR before you even hop in the car.

Well the company I work for has been very sketchy from the word go. It's called JW Research, it's a marketing company.

Check out their website:

hahaha no, but she's probably out of vancouver, that's where the head-office is. They don't even have an office in Victoria, I basically work independantly and there's a manager for the Island who lives in Nanaimo.

Paid Travel Expenses....? *UPDATE*

So my little business trip got cut short by a little comment commonly known as "GO FUCK YOURSELF!" ....Here's what happened.

So I had to go pick up display shit from my boss's house in Nanaimo on the way to Courtenay (Nanaimo is about 1.5 hours out of Victoria) so I go get the shit, he doesn't say anything to me. So I go up to Courtenay, I do my work for the day. So me and the other dude I'm with go back to the hotel. I get a call from home saying that my boss was trying to get a hold of me. He never called my cell so I don't know wtf he wants. So anyway, next thing we know, the mother-fucker is at the hotel. He drove all the way from Nanaimo (2 hour drive) just to come tell us something. He tells us that his manager did not approve the $14 they said they were going to pay us for the travel, since we were still in the training period, they were going to continue to pay us $11.50 without paying for any of our expenses. Funny you mentioned the what it says on the website....I brought that up in the conversation to come. The buddy I'm with, first thing he says "That's fucken bull-shit!" so then I jumped in....and I"m like "uhhh yeah, you want us to work for the next 5 days, make about $400 after tax and you want us to pay $200 for travel expenses? Hell no" So the boss says to me "well look on the bright side, Monday is a stat holiday so you'll get stat pay, that should make up for the travel expenses. WHAT THE FUCK does that have to do with travel expenses, if I work a stat holiday pay me for my fucking stat holiday. So basically me and buddy told the guy that this was unacceptable and told him to go fuck himself. If I get my paycheck and it says $11.50 on it I'm contacting their HR department and filling an official complaint 'cause they're lying to everyone who applies there with false advertising the job at $14 an hour (it very recently changed to say "$12 - $14&quot however that never came true.

I find out over the next few days if I get my new job or not, but basically I got fucked over with this company.

Not to mention the fact that my boss was constantly harrassing me phoning my home telephone as late as 10 p.m. and phoning my cell phone as late as 11 p.m. As my brother says "what kind of drugs is this dumbass on...."

So I wasted 7 hours of my day driving up island and back, and I wasn't given a cent for doing so.

That motherfucker...

I'm sorry to hear that, man. I'm glad that you stood up to that prick. That was a prelude to many more rip-offs if you had stayed with the company.

Yeah... in hte US, for driving expenses alone we get a minimum of 37.5c/mile (actually, I think it's up from that now) for gas and depreciation when driving our own cars. But yeah a company not paying for food and such also is pretty lame.
