Motorcyclist stunt riders wanted after SUV accident

Stunt motorcyclists blamed in serious accident
Wreck forces SUV off road, injures five people
ST. LOUIS, Missouri (AP) -- Authorities are searching for a pack of highway stunt motorcyclists blamed for a wreck that seriously hurt five people in a sport utility vehicle.

A handful of motorcyclists were on Highway 364 Saturday when they changed lanes and cut off a Ford Explorer, forcing that vehicle to swerve to the right and hit a Chevrolet Suburban.

The Suburban tumbled down an embankment, ejecting most of its eight occupants. Five people in that vehicle were seriously injured; the other three sustained lesser harm. Only one was wearing a seat belt.

By some accounts, a chase vehicle was filming the motorcyclists.

Witnesses said the motorcyclists were "riding wheelies, showing off, doing stunts," with another vehicle following them, Patrol Cpl. Jeff Myers said. He called the antics "total disregard for the safety of others."

I don't ever flinch when there is a motorcycle around. I am careful not to cause them any problems, but if they want to play dice with their own life that's up to them. If I was the SUV driver I would have just ran them over.

Motorcyclists in Vancouver can be dangerous once the winter rains arrive. Some of them insist on wearing dark coloured suits. Very difficult to see in a quick shoulder check. In an SUV they could disappear.

I don't crowd motorcyclists, but I don't take no shit neither. If they want to respect the other drivers on the road, I do my best to give them lots of space. If they're driving like maniacs and expect me to swerve, they'll be eatin' asphalt at highway speed.

I try to be defensive around motorcycles since I am a motorcyclist and appreciate courteous driving. However, I'm with you LeeLee, if they're doing stupid a** crap, I'm not going to swerve if there are other vehicles around or if the conditions don't allow for it. This is a shame because A**holes like this give sportbike riders a bad name. I hope they find these punks.

I believe experienced bikers refer to jackasses like that as "squids". A friend of mine likes to call them "WhackAMoles", because we saw a bunch of them in Poughkeepsie bobbing up and down trying to do wheelies. They reminded us of those stupid games where the mole/alligator/frog/spider pops out of a hole and you have to whack it back down for points.

It's almost kind of a game now. We try identify "WhackAMoles" before everyone else. Not unlike the classic "Punch buggy" game involving VW beetles.

I heard about this on the radio yesterday, but they didn't give any details. I was wondering how a bunch of motorcycles would make an SUV hit another SUV. I bet they were members of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF). Don't they like to take out SUVs? Motorcycles 2, SUVs 0.

I think there is a natural rivalry between motorcycle riders and SUV drivers. After all, they are on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of transportation efficiency. The motorcycle rider has a small engine with two wheels, all tucked between his legs. A motorcycle rider is alert of traffic situations and cars around him. Meanwhile, the SUV driver likely has a honking V8 hauling him plus 4 tons of metal and creature comforts around him. And whether the stereotype is true or not, SUV drivers are viewed as disconnected from the driving experience, unaware of what's going on around them.

SUV drivers also have a reputation of being brutish on the road, using their size to bully other drivers, while motorcycles dash about and sometimes weave in/out of traffic due to their small size and agility.

So you put two vastly different modes of transportation, each blaming the other for being dangerous on the road, you get a lot of confrontations between these two groups.

As a side note, I was approaching a 2-lane left-turn signal that was turning yellow. In front of me was a whilte EVO and a light weight Suzuki of some sort, it looked small but like one of those motorcycles that people modified for circuit racing on weekends. Both of these went for the light, with the motorcycle on the outer lane. The motorcyclist put a lot of trust in the EVO because I wouldn't have put myself in that situation. What if the EVO went into a drift? But both went through the light at unbelievable speeds without a single tire squeal, just a lot of exhaust note. I caught up with them at the next light and saw them chatting with each other. It was at that time that I wished I had a Scooby Sti.
