Wow, what assholes.

I love how the author of the article felt it necessary to explain what was wrong with the erroneous 'facts.' Saddly, it probably was necessary.

Yeah I found that funny too. The only one that should have needed to be explained to anyone was the Death of a Salesman one.

Yeah... most people would know it... but I can understand if they didn't, or esp if they didn't notice (if it hadn't been pointed out I just wouldn't have noticed).

Well if you wanna be real anal about it, then the author isn't right either. The US isn't comprised of 50 states at all. Not technically anyway

Let's see.....

46 states.....4 commonwealths (Massachusetts, Virginia, Kentucky & Pennsylvania) and..........District of Columbia.

Not to mention a whole buncha territories like Puerto Rico, Guam, etc, etc all of which I can't recall without looking up. They don't form the '50 states' so I guess it's ok to exclude them.

Of course there are no legal differences between being a commonwealth or a state as far as being part of the federation. But it's all in the name!!

The only ones Smokin missed are the Virgin Islands and American Samoa. 55 total when you could all of them up.

umm, actually I was trying to imply that the US only had 46 states since 4 are commonwealths. Just an amusing technicality that I ran across a while back and it just stuck. Sure is fun telling people from those 4 that they don't live in a state at all

I do believe I missed a whole buncha US territories. So here is a list that came up upon googling...

∑ American Samoa
∑ Baker Island
∑ Guam
∑ Howland Island
∑ Jarvis Island
∑ Johnston Atoll
∑ Kingman Reef
∑ Midway Islands Territories
∑ Navassa Island
∑ Northern
∑ Mariana Islands
∑ Palmyra Atoll
∑ Puerto Rico
∑ Virgin Islands
∑ Wake Island

Some of these are of course uninhabited except by the military in some cases or the fishery department. And in one case, kingman Reef, it isn't even an island!!

As you say, Commonwealths and States are the same thing legally It is all the name... and even inside those "Commonwealths" you'll see a lot of things referred to as "state"... ie State Troopers.
