Finally leaving the south...

I finally get to leave hot ass texas and move to hot maryland. woot. got a job at john hopkins hospital working in a lab. yeah, yeah, i know, don't live in baltimore. whatever. anybody have any tips on good, safe areas around baltimore? as well as fairly low rent, cuz lab technicians just don't make any money. I'm pretty excited, getting out of Houston, where the Mazda scene pretty much sucks, and moving to an area with so many more meets. Getting closer to family too. 8)

I don't know how you are going to react, but I moved from Oklahoma to Maryland and it is so much better here. I'm not too sure about places to live in Baltimore, but I know a few people going to Johns Hopkins and UMBC and they love it, so it can't be too terrible a place. Hope you enjoy it!

Congrats Carolyn. Johns Hopkins is a great hospital. I almost went to work there myself a few years back.

Of course you do realize that Maryland is below the Mason-Dixon line so it is technically the south still? I know, I know, don't say that to a true southerner. I'm from Alabama originally and I have had that argument with folks for years.

I lived just south of Baltimore in an area called Pasadena for several years. It was nice when I lived there but it has changed from what I understand, so I wouldn't recommend it.

My wife is from a town called Perry Hall just north of Baltimore. It's a very nice area and there are lot's of 20-somethings in the area around White Marsh. Perhaps that would do.

As for living in the city, Baltimore isn't that bad if you stay in certain areas. Not too far from Johns Hopkins is an area called Fells Point which is probably out of your price range but maybe you could find a roomie. A lady that used to work with my wife owned a row house in Baltirmore and commuted to Reston, VA every day. She loved the city and had no desire to move.

One thing, be ready for a shock no matter what. Housing in the Baltimore-Washington corridor is generally outrageous and it doesn't look like it will be getting better.

Also, be ready for a potentially long commute depending on where you plan to live. For example, one of my friends has a 55 mile one-way commute. I used to have an 82 mile one-way commute. In fact, where I used to live might be an option for you. I lived over on Kent Island which is just across the bay from Annapolis. It would be around 45 miles for you but it's not too bad of a trip. The only bad part is the Bay Bridge during the summer. What makes it appealing is that the prices are significantly cheaper there.

Anyhow, congrats again. I'm glad you found somethnig.

Kent Island is a nice place, but the few times I have been there it was really windy, to the point where the tennis courts at Kent County High School have chain link fences for nets. From what I understand there are quite a few people that live on the Eastern Shore and go across the bridge for work. Also a tip for anyone visiting the eastern shore, the far right lan at the toll plaza is usally really quick because only semis use it and they are really long so they take up more space but there are fewer of them that need to stop and pay so it moves faster. The center 4 or 5 lanes seem to be the slowest for some reason. Hope this makes sense to anyone reading it. Also you only pay a toll when driving to the eastern shore, you don't have to pay to go back to the western shore.

:knockhead: ARG!!!.. Now why did you have to go and tell everyone else that????? :-)

You are absolutely right and it actually works that way at the toll plazas for the harbour tunnells too. For some reason the folks in cars don't like to move right around here so you can usually slip pass them by heading to the "slower" lanes.

I commuted over the bridge for 8 years and loved it. One of the neat mental effects of going over the bridge is the way your mind treats it. Your mind has a tendency to turn off the stress of work as you peer out at the bay. It's about a 4.5 mile bridge which gives you around 5 minutes of true relaxation. A very nice end to the day.

Congrats C! What an exciting phase of life you're beginning! (1st big move I'm guessing) Don't forget to snap pics of you and your 6 at every Natl. Monument, scenic overlook, and roadside attraction along the way (and wear those jeans in that pic you posted in a long ago thread. )
