Rochester - My new home town?

My wife and I might be moving to Rochester Minnesota for her to complete a medical residency in microbiology at the Mayo Clinic. Rochester is at the top of her list because of the Mayo Clinic.

As my profile says we live in Edmonton Alberta, despite it's size (about a million people in the metro area) Edmonton is quite a slow going relaxed city (see link http://www.intuit.com/canada/images/city_cityscape.jpg). No smog, low crime rates, close to lakes and the mountains for skiing. My wife and I run so one thing we really like about Edmonton is all the urban parkland (supposedly EDM has more urban parkland than any other city in North America).

I'm thinking the Rochester would be a good fit for us (from what I can see from Googling it) but I was wondering what kind of city Rochester is (weather, size, are the people friendly, best place to live close to downtown, etc)?

She is considering a few other US cities as well (Seattle, Bethesda MD, Atlanta). Is living in a big American center really as bad as the media makes it seem? People aren't really allowed to own hand guns and carry them around are they?

Thanks for your input.

Rochester - My new home town?

It's less than a hundred miles from Minneapolis where I was born and raised. I've only visited a few times though so can't offer the best informed opinion.

It's a big small town. Has the feel of a town with the services of a big city.

Yes, Minnesotan's can carry a hand gun. But you have to pass a background check that happens during a seven day waiting period. It's a recent law allowing concealed carry. There was fear that umpteen thousands would apply. I don't have numbers to quote, but I believe only a couple thousand have applied.

I have yet to see anyone with a holster, and have yet to see/read a news report of someone pulling their concealed gun out.

Welcome to Minnesnowta :-)
